Renting a car can be one of the most bewildering experiences to face. There are a number of things you need to know before booking a rental car for your trip or vacation:

1.      Shop around

Always compare at least three car rental agencies to get the cheap booking. Make every effort to get the best deal. A rate that sounds unbelievable low might not be so low when all is over. Clarify which taxes, surcharges and other fees you'll be expected to pay and be on the lookout for charges for extras you really need, such as permission for additional drivers to use the car.

2.      Discount and coupons

When booking a rental car online, be alert for little areas where you can enter a promotional code or discount code. That's a sign to open a web browser is another window and do a quick internet search for the car company's name along with the same catch phrase you spotted. You could find a coupon code in seconds and save on your rental. Remember that you also may have access to discount codes through organization memberships and other affiliations.

3.      Rent A Car according to your need

Always rent a car that is suited to your needs. For example if you want to travel with your full family a small compact car is not enough for you. Make the entire necessary request when you plan your reservation. For example, if you know you will need a child's car seat, don't forget to reserve it, but if you are only going to the airport from the hotel you might want to consider getting a smaller car to save money.

4.      Print the voucher

If you booked a car online, most of the times you will receive a voucher by E-mail, which specifies all the information regarding your reservation. Check that all the details on the voucher are correct.

Print the voucher and give it at the car rental company counter when you pick-up the car (if you won't give the voucher, there is a chance they will charge you twice).

5.      Check the contract thoroughly

Check the rental contract to make sure you're getting the correct rates and car type you ordered. Furthermore, make sure the dates and time of pick-up and return are accurate.

6.      Check for damage

Once you received the rented car, do a quick check for any damages; check that all the lights work, that there aren't any hits or dints on the sides of the car, that the radioCD player works fine, etc. If you spot anything significant, call it to the attention of the rental company before you take the car off the lot, so you won't be penalized for damaged you didn't cause.

7.      Think twice about the insurance

The car rental company may offer you all kinds of insurance to purchase. however, your personal auto insurance may be all you need in the event of an accident with a rental car. Check properly before paying extra at the rental counter.

8.      Keep credit card or debit card handy

Have a credit or debit card handy to reserve the rental car with, most companies will only guarantee a car with this insurance.

9.      Gas up

Don't prepay for gasoline and then don't forget to fill the tank back up before you return the car. If you fail to do so, expect to pay much more than the market price for the gasoline you owe.

10.  Be on time

If you return your car late, the rental agency may charge you as much as a full day's rental, sometimes at a rate higher than before. If you are going to be late, call the agency and explain your situation. It may help. Also, clarify what charges you might have to pay if you must drop the car off early.

If you'll follow all these tips, it might help you to avoid frustrating car rental experience and should save you a lot of time.

Great idea, but dogster.com already thought of it...

I live... in Milan with my wife and dog in an apartment built at the beginning of the 20th century - with huge ceilings and wooden floors. We've kept the house exactly as it was.
I design...jewellery, glass pieces, sculptures.

My favorite piece of furniture is... a turn-of-the-century dentist's cabinet in black, marble and glass. I found it in a flea market hidden behind a curtain and had to have it restored. Now it's in the corridor so we can always look at it. Another one is a 17th century chest of drawers which belonged to my wife's family.

My most valued possession is... a small drawing I gave my wife. I came from Verona and this drawing is exactly like Juliet standing on the balcony.

The best way to update a room... is to change the paintings on the walls.

My favourite room in the house is... the living room. It's the room we use most of the time. All the walls are coloured and there's not one space that's free of paintings and sculptures we collect. When you are surrounded by so many things you are affectionate about, you feel protected.
I would love to own... an empty room. I have too much stuff; I don't buy anything any more.
When on holiday... I look for what the people from that country use and wear. When we were in Yemen there was a special fabric I saw on some women and later I found one piece of it and bought it. Even if it's a very humble piece, I like to have a reminder.

Expressing yourself is... necessary for humans. When we produce something, it's proof that we exist.
A home to me is about... comfort. Every piece in the house should be absolutely comfortable - almost so that the design disappears.

My top tip is... buy handmade but with a brain. People think just because something is handmade that it has value and I don?t believe that. Something handmade is very special. It's a question of moving something from within your body into the representation of an object.

Drawing designs in chalk on the floor... is the old way to explain what you are thinking when you have the masterblower with you. It's very primitive but very clear.

I got involved with the birds... when some people from Iittala went to the USA and saw a big glass exhibition - and one of the pieces I designed was the poster for the exhibition. They were looking for someone to make these birds so they decided to use me.

My favorite bird is... the Circoli (?478.99). It has one shade on the outside and something rich and unique on the inside when you cut it open.

I couldn't say... what my favourite piece of my own design is. At each moment of my life it's something else. I'll love something one minute and hate it the next.

My favourite material to work with... at the moment is glass. Working with glass is a collective experience.

At the moment I'm working on... a new exhibition for 2009. Each one takes me two years to prepare.

Lead Leash

Training my puppy to walk with a lead?

My puppy is 10 weeks old and i'm trying to train him to walk with a lead. He's use to his collar but when i put the lead on him he just refuses to move or lay's down, nothing i do will make him move. What can i do to get him to walk with the leash? I've tried a headcollar and it didn't work cos it just slid right up into his eyes so had to take it off everytime.

You're puppy seems like it needs a little time to get used to the leash. When he's in the house you can attach it to his collar just to let him drag it around and get used to it. If he likes to eat, attach his leash when he's eating. Good things happen when the leash is on. If you do choose to use these methods make sure that you don't use your best leash as there's a chance that your puppy could choose to chew on it. Whatever you do, don't try to force your puppy to be on a leash by dragging him. Use positive encouragement. When he stubbornly refuses to move forward, call to him in a silly voice. Maybe use his favorite food or toy to lure him forward. When he does come, let him know how good he is. Maybe try a few minutes a day. Miracles don't happen over night. Good luck with your pup. I think we've all been there at some point.

Help! How can I clip my dogs nails?

I have a 6 month old miniature dachshund. When I try to clip her nails she struggles, jerks and whines so much I can't clip them. I only clip the tip so I don't hurt her, but during the three times trying I have only clipped 4 nails. Two when she wasn't paying attention and she didn't even notice what I did. The vet did it once I heard her in the room yelping and once my boss did them. She is a dog person and very sweet but my puppy still gave her a hard time and tried to bite at the clippers. She HATES it! She is a very good dog, never bites anyone or barks. She obeys when I tell her to stay or sit but when trying to clip her nails she is a strong willed puppy. I know I can have my vet or Pets mart clip them but I want to do it and her to learn its ok. I have used nail clippers, professional dog nail clippers and the Pedi Paws from TV. He doesn't like any of them. Please help!! Do you have any suggestion on what to do to make her more relaxed or calm down? What can I do?

Hey Barbie, I have a 2 year old Blood Hound German Shepherd mix. I have the same issue with him, except he does bite. He actually doesn't even like it when you just touch his feet...
I'm wondering maybe the clippers might have sort of twisted a toenail that you weren't aware of at the time, or maybe split the nail up pretty far that went unoticed.
About the only other alternative is for you to take her on long walks/runs on sidewalks, if that is possible. The concrete will wear her toenails down quickly, and will help keep them that way.
When I trim my dog with the rotary trimmer, I do only one or two nails at a time, and quite before he or I both get stressed. Then, an hr or so later, do two more. This takes most of the day, but I find it helps keep him calmer. Just make sure that you don't really hold her down, because you don't want her to bite you out of fear.
Talk to your vet about maybe buying one of those Elizabethian collars for her...an oversized one, that would prevent her from biting you, and tie her up short so you can handle her easier. I'm not sure if that would work, but it's a shot in the dark to end the situation you now find both of you suffering.
Good luck...sometimes those little dachsunds or even a larger breed can be quite a handful...just like a child....

First and most important, what causes a dog to be aggressive towards other dogs?

Most dogs have a natural territorial instinct, some more than others, and it's important that you spend some time researching the characteristics of the breed you are considering buying before making a commitment.

In addition, fear is a type of aggression. This is termed 'fear motivated aggression'. Certain breeds of dogs tend to be more aggressive than others, no matter how they were raised, Other types of aggression are dominance, territorial, possessive, protective, and redirected aggression.

A study by the University of Pennsylvania as well as 6,000 dog owners concluded that the number one aggressive breed out of the 33 breeds surveyed was the Dachshund, that's right the wiener dog. The study found that one in five dachshunds have bitten or tried to bite strangers, and a similar number have attacked other dogs; one in 12 has snapped at their owners.

A nervous or highly-strung dog often feels intimidated and will react aggressively. German shepherds are often very nervous and will attack small breeds if they annoy them by barking or nipping at them.

Other breeds with suspect dispositions are:

•    Llasa Apso: can be cranky with kids
•    Toy poodles: bite out of self defense
•    Rhodesian Ridgebacks: very dominant breed
•    Miniature Pinschers: "big dog" mindset in little body
•    Pekinese: intolerant
•    Chihuahuas: prefer adults, not tolerant of kids
•    Chow Chow: one-person dogs, bite without warning
•    Giant Schnauzers: very dominant breed, will even challenge adults
•    Old English Sheep Dog: very protective of owner
•    Cocker Spaniel: very protective of owner
•    Rottweilers: very protective

Therefore, what can we do to prevent aggression directed towards other dogs. Obedience training is the first and most obvious step. When trained correctly from the beginning, the dog will respond to its owner's commands.

Once your dog recognizes your authority and accepts that you are the boss, he will be more manageable. Socialization is the next step. You should gradually introduce your dog to other dogs so he becomes used to being around them and less prone to react aggressively.

Dog training to eliminate aggressive behavior should always be carried out with patience and understanding. Never rush your dog and most important, NEVER punish him. Instead, employ positive reinforcement and praise and reward him when he behaves correctly. All dogs love to please their owners and respond to praise and treats. Without exception, I have always found the simple philosophy of praise and reward to be the most effective means to train your dog.

Always, always remain calm. All too often I see owners who become embarrassed by their dog's aggressive behavior on the leash, or they are frightened that their dog is going to hurt another dog and often over react or under react. If you become tense, your dog will feel it instantly is more likely to increase the aggressive behavior.

Be especially aware of your body language, and do whatever it takes to maintain your cool. Focus on working with the dog, not on what others are thinking about your dog.

Be constantly aware of your surroundings. It is usually far better to notice a dog approaching from a distance and start working with your dog, than it is to wait for that dog to be upon you and then try to CALM your dog.

Having said that, never reinforce the behavior. Often I see nervous owners stop and pat their dogs saying something like "it's okay" in a sing-song voice. All this does is teach your dog that you approve of the behavior. After all, he's just behaving reactively, and you're patting him for it!

Try giving the dog something to do. Don't  just fall back on a sit-stay, but work the dog in some kind of a sequence. Keep him busy with something else; keep his brain engaged.

Prevent problems by reading the warning signals ahead of time. For extra control, I always recommend using a halti-collar that fits over the dog's face and fastens above the neck. The leash attaches to a ring below the dog's throat. What does it accomplish? It allows a dog who might otherwise pull on the lead to self-correct without any jerking, yanking, or pinching. It is made of nylon, is quite durable, and comes in one of six sizes and needs to be fitted to the dog.

Invented by a Dr. Roger Mugford it works on the principal that no animal likes to walk with its head turned to the right or left. As a dog begins to forge ahead, reaching the full extent of a short or long leash, the halti-collar will gently turn the dog's head. The dog learns very quickly not to drag ahead. If he does not remember, a slight wrist pressure will remind the dog to stop or slow down.

These are just few tips for handling a leashed dog that is aggressive towards other dogs. If you find you are still unable to resolve the issue yourself, it would probably be best to contact a trainer experienced in dealing with the problem.
