Everyone wants their dog to behave nicely when walking on lead. But many times, new dog owners can be quickly identified as the ones who are trailing along behind their dogs, like an anchor behind a wayward boat in a storm.
If you are tired of being pulled along by your dog, you need to put yourself back in control and take the lead. Running along behind your dog yelling his name or yelling commands with no effect is basically begging your dog for recognition, and he is ignoring you.
First, get the right equipment. I prefer a slip lead, sometimes referred to as an English lead, to train leash walking. This is basically a large, soft rope that goes in a slip loop around your dog's neck. When your dog is behaving well, the loop hangs comfortably loose; when they are misbehaving, a quick snap on the lead will remind them to get back to where they are supposed to be without hurting him.
You should also hold the lead very short when training. Hold the handle in your right hand, run the length of the lead behind the small of your back, and grip the lead again with your left hand, holding very little slack between your hand and your dog. This will give you a better hold on the dog, and if he pulls suddenly, he will be pulling at the small of your back, which is a much better point from which to hold back against his pulling.
The key to leash walking is to keep your dog's attention on you. Periodically give small snaps on the lead with a command, like 'Heel' when he is starting to wander off, and tell him 'Good Boy!' when he is following correctly. To further keep his attention, abruptly change directions from time to time, and snap the lead to bring him in your direction. If he is pulling you in one direction, quickly change to the other direction and snap him in line beside you, then change direction again, always making sure he follows you closely. This keeps your dog from guessing which way you're going to go, and instead forces him to watch you to keep track of these erratic direction changes.
If you tend to have trouble when meeting other dogs or people on the street, give little snaps on the lead to keep his attention as other walkers approach. If all else fails, change direction quickly for a bit, then back again, or stop moving completely and put him in a sit, all the while keeping his attention on you and praising him for ignoring the other people and dogs.
Above all, be confident, firm and consistent, so that your dog knows that you are not asking for his attention, you expect it. Once he knows that you are in the lead, your dog will quit trying to walk himself.
