Silver is an attractive and sophisticated metal that would make a great complement to any jewelry collection. While real silver does not actually cost much, compared to the likes of gold, there remains a wide market for the sale of sterling silver, particularly among the younger consumers.

Unfortunately, to the untrained eye, comparing fake versus sterling silver can be quite a task -- and sellers often take advantage of this lack of knowledge and sell fake versions at the price of the authentic ones. Your goal, therefore, is to find out how not to get duped.

Fake Vs Sterling Silver

How can you tell fake from sterling silver? Here are a few tips:

1. Real silver is stamped with a hallmark.

Like gold, authentic silver comes with a small stamp or engraving which contains information about its silversmith and the date it was made. Whether it is machine engraved or hand engraved is pretty easy to distinguish by just looking at it. A stamp that has 'EPNS' on it is an indication that it is sterling silver, as it simply means 'electro plated nickel silver'.

2. Silver jewelry must be at least 92.5% pure silver.

Silver used alone is too soft to function properly as jewelry. Thus, all silver jewelry should be at least 92.5% pure silver, with the rest made up of appropriate alloys to help it harden. This is normally indicated by a "925" engraving on the jewelry itself. Of course, the lower this number, the closer it is to being less and less real silver. These engraving can be difficult to spot-look on the back of pendants, on clasps, and on the inside of rings for real silver markings.

3. Watch out for silver plate: Silver colored jewelry may simply be silver plated.

Silver plated jewelry, which is not totally real silver, would usually have an "A1" stamped on it, along with its makers engraving. When the silver tarnishes or chips off, it reveals the real metal used underneath, which can cause skin problems, like rashes and metal allergies, for some people. Beware of buying items that are simply silver plated, especially if your skin is hypersensitive.

4. Run it through a nitric acid test. A great way to test whether the silver jewelry you have is the real deal is by testing it nitric acid. You can choose to have this done by the local jewelry shop or you may do it yourself.

To do this, select a part of the jewelry that is least noticeable as the site to run your test. Rub this portion thoroughly to cause a break in the plating of the surface. Place a few drops of nitric acid onto the site and wait a few minutes. If the liquid becomes cloudy grey, then it is sterling silver; but if it becomes green, then what you have in your hands is simply silver plated.

Always keep in mind that there is no such thing as silver jewelry that is 100% pure silver. As mentioned earlier, silver has to be mixed with other alloys to make it sturdy enough to serve its purpose. The best way to ensure that you buy only genuine silver pieces is to purchase your jewelry from a trusted seller.

Suppose you have silvery hair. The natural assumption of those with whom you live and work would be that you are of an age when the hair begins to lose its color. If your hair turned grey before you were 20 or 30 years of age, it might be a dietary deficiency, a medical concern – or genetics.

A black Labrador Retriever, silver factored with a coat that is something less than black, is claimed by some to be a pure bred dog. Purportedly rare and highly desirable, a black Labrador Retriever that's silver factored may be offered at a higher than normal price. Does it merit this? Or is it simply a crossbreed – a mongrel?

Black Labrador Retriever Standard

The Labrador Retriever breed standard says: "The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow, and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification." The breed standard goes on to say that black Labrador Retrievers must be all black. If a black Labrador Retriever has a small white spot on the chest, it is "permissible, but not desirable" according to the breed standard.

A black Labrador Retriever, silver factored or not, must meet that standard. Every purebred black Labrador Retriever must be black.

Genetically Speaking

A black Labrador Retriever, silver factored or otherwise at odds with the standard, apparently has genetics that are not in line with those of the breed. The genetics of a true black Labrador Retriever's coat color seem to be rather simple. Each dog receives two pairs of genes: one from its mother and one from its father.

You will remember from early science class that there are two types of gene in every living being: dominant and recessive. This is true of you and it is true of black Labrador Retrievers. Genes determine your hair color, just as genes determine the coat color of a black Labrador Retriever. You might have brown, black, red, blond, or a variation of any of those. A Labrador Retriever has only two choices: black and chocolate – although we see black, chocolate, and yellow.

Consider these facts.

1. In Labrador Retrievers, a dominant gene always determines what color the coat will be. Always. It does not matter what other genes are present. The black gene, which we will call "B" for short, is dominant. Therefore, if a "B" gene is present, the pre-selected coat color is black. But read on.

2. We will call the recessive chocolate gene "b" for short. The "b" gene can only produce a chocolate coat if the dog inherits no "B" gene. Those are the only choices: "B" dominant black genes and "b" recessive chocolate genes. There is no gene for yellow, silver, or other colors. A black Labrador Retriever, silver factored or other factored, would have to go against this genetic makeup.

3. In addition to the black and chocolate genes, Labrador Retrievers have two more genes. These genes determine the dogs' ability to express a dark coat, i.e. to let the dark color show. Let's call the dominant expression gene "E" for short and the recessive expression gene "e" for short.

4. Labrador Retrievers that have the dominant "E" gene are able to express a dark coat. They can show black or chocolate. If the dog has a "B" gene and an "E" gene, it will be black, no matter what other genes it has. If it has a "b" and an "E" gene, it will be chocolate.

5. Labrador Retrievers that have the recessive "e" gene cannot show a dark coat. They will show neither black nor chocolate. They will show the absence of those by being a shade of yellow. A Labrador Retriever with a combination such as BBee has 2 dominant genes for black, but the recessive "e" genes will not let the color show. The dog will be yellow.

You will see that a black Labrador Retriever, silver factored is not possible with these pairs of genes. There is no scientific data as of this writing (2007) that has found any silver gene in black Labrador Retrievers.

True Nature of So-called Silver Labs

A black Labrador Retriever that is said to be silver factored may be an unusually light yellow or chocolate Lab. There is also, in the U.S., a gray-brown shade similar to that of Weimaraners. It is reported that the U.S. kennel first to report "silver" Labradors also kept Weimaraners, a silvery-gray breed with somewhat similar appearance. It is widely believed that the true nature of a black Labrador Retriever, silver factored, is that of a crossbreed: Labrador Retriever – Weimaraner mix.

The AKC recognizes "silver" Labs only as chocolate, and rejects them because they do not meet the breed standard for chocolate Labs. A black Labrador Retriever that's silver factored is not an AKC standard purebred dog.

If never planning to breed your pet, there are many benefits of having your dog spayed or neutered, and at an early age. Besides preventing housebreaking accidents, there are serious potential health risks you could be sparing your dog from.

In a female dog, spaying is performed under a general anesthetic and is easy on the dog, especially if she is young. It is a little harder on older females, but that is no reason not to have it done. A female dog that is not spayed is at risk of developing mammary or ovarian cancer later in life. To prevent mammary cancer, she needs to be spayed prior to having her first heat cycle. Also, later in life, she is at a risk of developing an infected uterus, which is very life threatening.

The surgery for neutering a young male dog involves removing the testicles but leaving the scrotum. It is a relatively simple procedure, and generally the animal is able to walk out of the veterinary office the same day. Leaving your pet intact puts him at risk of getting testicular cancer and other diseases in the genital region.

Neutering a male dog an an early age will inhibit or eliminate some of the male behavior that owners do not like. They usually will not hike their legs and mark their territory as often, if at all. Neutering at an early age also has hormonal benefits, as it lessens the chance of hormonal aggressiveness.

Dogs that are not neutered or spayed are prone to housebreaking accidents. Females will urinate frequently before, during, and after heat cycles, while males tend to mark their territory often when there is a female in heat. Males will show the same behavior if there is a visiting male dog.

Some people worry about their dog gaining wait after being spayed or neutered. This is usually not the case. Some dogs do become less active then they were before the surgery, so weight could become a problem. But the dog owner just needs to decrease the food some, and make sure his pet gets a little more exercise.

And don't forget the treats! Have plenty of treats to give your pet when they are restless. Some treats will work better than others in a vehicle. Pick treats that won't make a mess, won't make alot of noise and will keep the pet busy. For dogs, consider a Kong treat, which is a rubber like treat that you can insert smaller treats into. Your pet will be distracted trying to get the treats out of the toy.

Comfort

Don't forget to bring along your pets favorite blanket, pillow or stuffed animal, the familiarity with these items will decrease any shock or homesickness the pet might feel. Bring along extra blankets so the pet can take a nap or rest in it. It will also keep pet hair away from your seats!

Safety

Nowadays, there are special safety harnesses and belts for different sizes of dogs. For small dogs, there are modified car seats that have a padded area for the dog to sit in. The car seat, or pooch seat, is strapped into the seat using a seatbelt. In addition, for medium and large size dogs, you may be worried about them jumping around in the vehicle while you are driving. For larger dogs, there are harnesses which basically keeps the dog in their seat using a specially modified version of a seatbelt. These restraints allow the dog to sit in the seat and still enjoy a view out the window without endangering themselves or the driver. For large and older dogs, there is also a restraint that allows your dog to sit or lay in the back seat of the vehicle safely and is especially good if you're going off road or going to travel rough roads with many turns and bumps, as these harnesses will keep your dog in place.

Car Sickness

For dogs that throw up during car rides, there are options to help. There are prescription drugs for pets that you can get from your veterinarian. There is also the over the counter drug Dimenhydrinate, also known as Dramamine. You can give your pet the same type of Dramamine as for for adults. About 30 to 50 milligrams is the recommendation for medium size to large dogs and about 10 to 15 milligrams for smaller dogs and cats. Dramamine should be given about an hour before you leave. Many dogs will be less carsick if you let the dog look out the window and/or let some fresh air hit the dog in the face. For some dogs, by distracting the dog with a new and exciting dog toy or treat, they will overcome their fear of riding in a car.

Potty Breaks

Don't forget to take breaks for the dog to go potty. Take your time letting the pet find just the right spot to do his or her business, it may take longer at a rest stop or other unfamiliar place, especially if the area is frequented by many other dogs and animals. Take a quick jog for a few minutes to rid the pet of excess energy, if needed. Also, in unfamiliar places, keep your dog on the leash at all times.

You must not ever leave your pet in a vehicle when the outside temperature is even slightly warm for more than 30 minutes. Your vehicle will act almost like an oven and the inside temperature of a vehicle sitting in the sun, even when it's only a little warm outside is often too much for a pet to stand.
