When your puppy comes home everyone is so excited. You have done your homework and have found the perfect puppy. You understand how to communicate leadership to your pup. Now What?

• Before bringing your puppy home take the time to decide what that puppy is going to be allowed to do as an adult dog and don't let it do that activity as a puppy.
• Pick out your commands and make each one specific and be consistent.
• Puppy proof your home: cords not dangling, items left on the floor picked up, dangerous chemicals up and out of the way.

When your puppy comes home it's wise to have a dog crate, "no" this isn't mean. At least section off a small area that the puppy can call it's own where it will be safe and feel secure. Make sure this area is small, and easy to clean in case the pup has a potty accident. This will also aid in house breaking your puppy to go potty outside.

The neat thing about a dog crate you can put it in your bedroom at night so the puppy won't feel alone. Give the pup just enough room to stand up, lay down, and turn around. You're more apt to get some sleep. It will also be easier to hear your pup if it has to go potty during the night.

When your puppy comes home, make sure you bring home some of the same food that your pup is use to eating. If you change the pups food all of a sudden you could cause your pup to get diarrhea.

Give your puppy a good, short, positive name. I caution you against using negative names like trouble, mischief, demon, devil, and so on. Remember names mean something!

Before you your puppy comes home, hopefully you have found a good holistic vet. They are less likely to over vaccinate and use drugs. They will be more apt to lead you in a proper diet for your pup. Raw, which is best, or at least a quality kibble, or dehydrated food that you add meat, eggs, cottage cheese, veggies, and fruits too.

Take your puppy to your new vet for a fun visit several times to get acquainted. This will help your pup enjoy going to the vet's office. Take your pup to other places to socialize. One hundred times a month is a good rule of thumb. Make sure your pup always has fun and a pleasant experience.

Have an adjustable buckle collar that will grow with your puppy and a lightweight leash. Put the collar on your pup at mealtime and leave it on except when your pup is in the crate. Always put the collar back on when the pup comes out of the crate and give it a meal or a food treat or play with him. This will be a pleasant experience and help to get his mind off of the collar. Puppy may not like the collar, but he will get use to it quickly.

With the leash supervise and let the pup drag the leash around. Then pick up the leash and follow the puppy. Soon you will be able to encourage your pup with voice, toy and or a food treat to follow you. NEVER drag your puppy to get it to walk on the leash.

If you decide to build a kennel for your dog, I want you to know that is not that hard to do. If you have some time and will, you will do it fast. It will take you just a few hours to build a quality one. In this article you will find some ideas on how to build your own dog kennel.

The size and the style of the kennel

Basically, there are 3 major types of kennels. The first is the medium one, for a single dog. It is recommended for the small breeds like the Jack Russells or the Dachshunds. Be aware of the fact that inside the kennels it can get quite hot. Make sure you have place for ventilation also.

The second type is the large house for a single dog. It is highly recommended for big dog breeds like the German Shepperd, the Doberman or the Golden Retriever. If you do it properly it will be perfect and cold in summer time and warm in winter.

That is not that recommended because the pointed roof can attract wasps or hornets that can make the nest there. If you live in a wet area, build a roof that can drain easily. Also, the kennel needs to be lifted from the ground at least 2 - 3 inches. This will keep everything cool in summer time and also, in rainy times, it will prevent the dog from getting wet. Put hinges on the roof also to make the cleaning process really easy.

And last, but not the least, make sure you have measured the dog before you have cut the length of the wood. Adjust the plants if the dog is bigger.

Many years ago, long before some of the legislation regarding harm of animals, some psychologists conducted research projects. In one of them, they placed a dog in a cage which was fitted in the middle with a vertical grate that rose to half the height of its walls. The psychologists had rigged a device that would give the dog a small electric shock. When the dog received the shock, it would jump over the center grate to the other side of the cage. The psychologists would then move the dog to the original side of the cage and give it another shock.

This process was repeated over and over again. Then the researchers decided to change the rules.

The dog was placed on the original side of the cage and given a shock. When it jumped over the grate, however, it was then given another shock on that side of the cage. It didn't take long until the dog didn't bother to jump over the grate. It knew that no matter which side of the cage it was on, there would be a shock over which it had no control.

The dog lay down in the corner of the cage and just took the shocks as they occurred.

Finally, the researchers opened the door of the cage to let the dog out. How surprised they were to watch the dog continue to lie in the corner and not even try to leave. The dog had developed what we term as "learned helplessness".

Many individuals have had experiences in their lives which conditioned them to accept harmful life events without feeling like they can change things or take control. They are repeatedly beaten but return to the relationship over and over after each incident.

People who suffer from learned helplessness do not think that they have control in their lives which would result in a positive outcome. They use a passive behaviour style and allow fear to form the bar of their own cages. They tend not to take many risks and usually suffer from low self-esteem.
