Are you a dog owner? Then you should know about the importance of dog training. If you are not a dog owner yet, but want to own one, then perhaps you would like to know how to train a dog before owning one.

A well trained dog is a prized possession and an untrained dog could be a source of annoyance, frustration and sometimes embarrassment. The real problem in training a dog is that most of the dog owners think that they don't have the time or patience to train their dogs. They are partially right - only partially right, because many dog owners do not realize that they also need the expertise to train a dog! Well, training a dog is not the same as training an animal to perform in a circus, but it requires a professional approach all the same.

It may be surprising to know how many happy owners of dogs had their dogs trained by experts! So, what stops others from getting their dogs trained? To my mind, there are four important factors.

1) Many of us are not aware of the need for professional training.

2) People do not like to send their dogs to training schools, the way they send their children to schools. After all, there should be some difference between nurturing a child and grooming a dog!

3) People do not like their dogs to be trained by some other people. They would like to get themselves involved in the training, even when they have time constraints.

4) Dog Training is very expensive. Many dog owners are not just prepared to shell out huge amounts of cash for training their dogs, even if they can afford the expenditure.

So, the result is that several dog owners are getting reconciled to live with untrained, disobedient and misbehaving dogs!

But this need not be the case. You can train your dog yourself with some expert help. I am not suggesting that you attend courses to become a trainer of dogs. In the present internet era, we can get almost anything, sitting at home.

Suppose you can find a dog trainer who is going to offer you online help in a simple and easy to follow way and if he is not going to charge a fortune for this, won't you like to try him / her out? I would suggest that you do. Look for his/her background, experience and reputation (through testimonials) and choose one. You can become an expert through online dog training.

Dog training is not rocket science and is not as difficult as you think. It is certainly possible for ANY dog owners to train their dogs themselves provided they put in adequate amount of effort. The principles listed here are universal to dog training of any dog breeds, be it sporting, working, toy or terrier, any dogs - big or small, pup or old, any Owners - competitive or leisure.

In short, if you are serious about training your dog and demand Only success, You MUST apply these principles. No "If" No "But". Get the basic right first before you start to train your dog!

Consistency

Consistency is very important during training and correcting unwanted behavior. Always use the same "command" for a specific task you require of your dog. Don't confuse him by using different command for the same task.

Once you've establish some house rules such as - keeping the cooking area out of bound to your dog, enforce them constantly. If the dog learns that he can get away with it now and then, your previous efforts will go down the drain. Lastly, make sure everyone in the family accept and enforce your rules consistently.

Timing

Timing is critical to successful training. Praise your dog whenever he is doing something right. As expected, reprimand him on the spot and to the point whenever he misbehave or fails to response to your command. Praise and reprimand that happen later will have no effect on your dog.

* There are 2 main schools of thoughts concerning the timing of correction when your dog misbehaves. I called the first school of thoughts the "Direct Approach". It simply requires you to reprimand your dog on the spot if he misbehaves. This is more of a tangible and straight forward approach to training your dog and is easy to understand for most trainers.

I called the second school of thoughts the "Endurance Approach" as it'll require you to ignore your dog when he misbehaves. Using the cause and effect to your advantage, this approach requires you to ignore the dog, especially when he misbehaves to seek attention and encourage you to pay attention to your dog only when he's a good boy.

Attention Factor (Endurance Approach)

Dogs love attention and are hugely motivated by it. Unlike man, dogs do not know how to differentiate between positive and negative attention. They see things in a simple way. If a certain action gets reaction and attention, you'll bet they repeat it over and over again. (Cause and Effect)

Unfortunately, for most dog owners, we more often than not give our dogs negative attention. For example, "Do you let him out of his crate when he groans?" or "Do you give chase when he runs off with your socks?" These are negative attentions given to the dog and is certainly motivating his bad behavior.

Fortunately, the opposite is true if you pay enough attention to your dog when he behaves himself. When the dog understands that he'll get attention only when he's behaving, he'll learn that only good behavior attract attention and he'll repeat his good behavior always.

Focus your attention on your dog only when he is behaving; praise him or give him a treat, let him know that he's getting the attention. If this technique is used correctly, he'll be a well-behaved dog for a long time to come. Nevertheless, this approach is probably not for the short temper and requires you to go through an endurance ordeal. Imagine your dog chewing up your sock in your presence. "Endure Dude!"

Training Mood

You need to be in the correct frame of mind before you train your dog. Never train your dog when you are under the influence of alcohol or drug. Also try not to train him if you've a bad day or not in the best of your mood.

If you've just argued with your sweetie or got a telling off from your boss earlier on. You would most probably take out your frustration on him and threaten your relationship with him in future.

Do remember to apply these dog training principles constantly & you'll be half-way through to successful dog training.

Most of us, when we go to the store, will find a surplus of dog products and jingles, and not all of them always deliver what they promise. As a result, consumers have grown numb, turning their heads away every time they hear anything about a new product. This trend, which also includes newly developed training aids for dogs, makes it difficult for pet owners to be receptive to these gadgets that can actually make dog training a wholes lot easier. Of course there are many of them out there, and you will need to do your research to figure out which is of most assistance to you and your dog.

For ages the standard training aid has always been a snack of some kind. Be it chopped meat, bacon, or a biscuit, you will have a hard time finding a dog that refuses the offer to eat something. Using snacks as rewards when your dog obeys has proved to be very effective for dog trainers. When it comes to the amount of money involved in this training aid, it can't be beat. One cannot deny the effectiveness of this method either. In use for ages, trainers still use it today as the method of choice for obedience training.

When a dog is being trained for agility, most seem to follow a pattern in which they will start barking all the time for no apparent reason. This is due to the increased energy levels, and the need to express their emotions. A training aid for this type of training has become available called the anti-bark collar. These collars can either provide a small electric shock on the dog, or sprinkle a little water into their face. The word on the street is that these collars are a form of torture. Although there haven't been any cases reported of dogs being electrocuted from one these collars, for some people this is just preposterous. A third kind that chokes your dog, seems to have slowly disappeared from store shelves.

The latest fad in training aids for your dog, are the famous dog clicker boxes. These boxes are meant to substitute the word, or words used to associate and action, such as "come", with a click from the metal box. Another common training aid in the market are a form of harness, fitted around your dog. When this product activates, it helps your dog bend all the way down when teaching him to sit.

Many other training aids become available on a day to day basis. Companies responsible for the manufacturing and sale of dog products are larger than ever, holding large sized budgets for research and experimentation. This means more and better innovations for you, the consumer. Although there are many products that can easily be labeled junk, don't miss out on the ones that can really be worth it. The first step in your buying process should always be to do your research at home, read reviews and recommendations for what have been successful products in the market. Reading somebody else's experience with any particular product can save you a lot of cash.

Dog training advice is created so that owners and trainers are well guided with the dos and the don’ts when it comes to training their canine friends. Always make that you provide a fun and eventful training for your canine friend. Training shouldn’t be a torture session but instead it should serve as a bonding occasion between you and your dog. Today, there are a lot of training materials that can give you dog training advices. Some trainers and owners even surf and download a step by step guide in training dogs on the internet. Training dogs in particular requires a lot of time, effort and most of all patience. Always remember that dogs are like children. Some learns faster than others. Always make sure that the current lessons or the previous lessons are already well mastered before you start teaching your dog some new tricks again. This is done to avoid confusion. Recap on previous lessons is important so that your dog will never forget what you have taught him.

Having a dog around will simply mean that you are accepting new sets of responsibilities. Training dogs is a routinely thing that you must practice everyday. Never rush any lessons when you train your dog. Some tricks takes a longer time to learn compared to others. If you want your dog to simply be a pet then you can only train him with basic tricks and basic practices. But, if you are planning on having your dog as a companion or a friend, then a more detailed dog training advice is what you need. You can start your training with a simple routine everyday especially if you are just training puppies. Never train your dog if you had a bad day in the office because you are already frustrated and you should not channel these negative feelings toward your dog. Dogs are sensitive. They can sense these frustrations and if you started to vent these out negatively, they will become scared and unfit for any training. The proper place to train a dog at first is inside your home because he might find it difficult to focus when you’re in the park. There are too many things that are happening around him. Aside from that, most of the dog training advice will tell all trainers and owners to refrain from hitting their dogs. You should not hit your dog at all because hitting them will not make them absorbs each lesson faster but instead they will start to learn and build a more aggressive character.

The most effective way on how to make your dog follow your command or order is to reward or praise them every now and then especially if they have been a good dog. Dogs are similar to human beings. They also wanted to be praised, acknowledged and rewarded. Other types of dog training advice will tell you to treat your dogs by giving him snacks whenever he fully learns new tricks because some trainers believe that even dogs need some motivation and these treats serve just that.

As a result of popular demand, a new service has caught many communities in the United States and Europe by storm. Just like you would do with your child's tutoring, a trainer would come to your home and teach your dog a few lessons at a fixed rate. Considering what needs to be taught, the handler would draw up a working schedule, which would determine the length of time he would be at work with your dog and the amount of cash it would take.

This type of service is becoming increasingly popular, especially in the United States. The increasing demands on pet owners by local authorities require all dogs in the U.S. to be trained. A dog that fails to comply with behavior limitations imposed on him could face the kennel and even being put down. These demands combined with a lack of time to dedicate to this task result in dog training services becoming more popular. Blue collar as well as white collar workers required to have a trained dog at home find it easier to pay for it than doing it themselves. Hiring a trainer will not only save them a lot of time and effort, but also having to get acquainted with a procedure they have absolutely to knowledge or experience on.

One of the most renowned dog training services is called Dog Busters. They have offices all over the world, and have made a name for themselves in the training business. Interested parties can go online and easily find a number of positive reviews based on other customer's experiences. However, if you are the skeptical type, they also offer a one hundred percent money back guarantee for the life time of the dog, so how could you go wrong? Obviously, this organization is very confident on the service they provide, and the system they use to deliver their end product.

Another big name in the dog training business is "Dog Training UK". They have a particular method of training, in which a vehicle picks up your dog and takes them to their local training center. He will remain there as a guest for his training classes, which take approximately three weeks. When they are done, they will return your dog fully trained. This technique allows them to concentrate on your dog, and get the animal's undivided attention. Their service is only available in the United Kingdom.

A larger number of people find themselves not being able to dedicate the time and effort dog training requires. The lack of time and experience can make this type of activity a dull and disappointing one, instead of what it should actually be, a fun and enjoyable activity. If you are the type of person who finds himself yelling at his dog more often than not, then perhaps the time has come to consider a professional service to do the job for you. You will end up saving all the stress, while keeping a good relationship with your dog.

The Petsafe instant fence utilizes a revolutionary concept that offers the safest and simplest form of pet containment. The installation process itself is very easy. The system's transmitter can simply be plugged in any convenient area in the house or garage. Your dog can wear a lightweight receiver collar that will detect the signal emitted by the transmitter. While the collar is receiving the signal, your dog can freely play in the contained area. Once the pet approaches the boundary, a simple beep will warn him. If he doesn't heed the beep, a startling light static energy will shock your pet. However, this is harmless.

Training Your Pet

Your pet may avoid frequent harmless shocks if you train him to learn his boundaries. An instructional video on how to train your dog comes with the Petsafe instant fence kit. After adjusting the containment area to your preference, you can mark the boundary by placing the training flags within the edges of the signal area. The kit also comes with 50 small training flags.

To start off, you can walk your pet around the boundary using a leash while holding the collar. While walking around, you can shake the flags while saying no to your dog. You can even let him hear the collar's beep. You can also use conditioning to enhance learning by alternately giving out scraps of food while training. You may do this for a couple of days until you think your dog has learned enough.

Testing Your Pet and the System

Now that you have trained your pet numerous times, you can let your pet wear the collar and walk around the boundary on his own. You can even let him cross the boundary and feel the correction. Once he is corrected, you can quickly pull him off, point the flags again, and say no to him. Through this, he will remember the corresponding correction every time he crosses the flags. You can repeat this process every day for a few weeks, and once your dog has learned its new boundaries, you can already remove the flags.

Factors to Consider while Dog Training

Your dog should be at least six months of age before starting the training, although it also depends on your dog's breed. As soon as the owner observes that the dog is accepting the correction, one call pull out his pet and redirect him through the sit-and-stay command.

If you want to take your dog for a walk out of the boundary, you can create the concept of "invisible gate." You can take out the dog through the "invisible gate." To do this, you can put a long leash on the collar and turn it off as well. Remove the collar and command the dog to the "sit and stay" position near the area that you designated as the invisible gate. One can come out of the invisible gate as ask the dog to "come." When you see your dog chewing the collar, you can pull him off and command him to the sit-and-stay position.

The first thing to do when trying to train your dog is to get your dog’s attention. It may sound obvious, but so many people miss this step. It is the most important thing you can teach your dog, as you need him to want to listen to you. If his mind is elsewhere, he will not learn.

Throughout his entire life, if you are ever having difficulties, come back to this basic principle. Can you get your dog’s attention? If not, you are likely to experience some difficulties in that situation.

Therefore, we will work through

1. What are you teaching? You to teach your dog that when you his name, it means ‘look at me, something interesting is going to happen’.

2. Begin in a relatively quiet environment, free from distractions. Find a quiet place.

3. Show your dog a piece of really interesting food. Have some treats in a small pot or in a pocket, out of your dog’s reach, holding only one piece in your hand at any time.

4. Use this as a lure to show your dog what you want. Find ways to encourage him to do it himself, Your dog should now be looking at you. Well done, he has already been successful.

5. Immediately your dog does as you want, reward him with the food and a fuss. Reward him.

6. At this stage, do not give your dog any words of command.

7. Repeat several times, until your dog is performing the action reliably. Then begin to say your word as the dog is doing the action, Begin to say his name before rewarding him.

8. Show your dog the treat and say your word. Reward him. No lures are necessary, just repeat several times.

9. Progress until you can say the word and your dog will repeat the action without following your hand. This should be easy to achieve.

10. Start varying the rewards. Use a different or less interesting reward sometimes; at other times, have the treat in your hand but give him only a fuss and praise as reward, as soon as he does what you ask. Continue to practice.

11. Gradually and randomly vary and decrease the rewards given. This means that your dog does not know when or with what he will be rewarded, He needs to respond to find out. Your dog should be confident that his name means ‘look at me to find out what nice things we are going to do together’.

12. Progress to repeating this sequence in different places, with an increasing number of distractions, This is where it becomes more difficult, but it is so important. Practise in many different situations. These will include:

In the house:

• with no distractions

• when a visitor has been here for a little while

• when a visitor first arrives

• when the doorbell rings

On a walk:

• with no distractions

• with a person or dog in the distance

• with a person or dog nearby

• when greeting a person or dog

• In the car

• In the garden

If you find that your dog cannot look at you when you ask, it is unlikely he will be able to do anything else for you. Always go back to this simple premise, which you taught your puppy right from the start.

If you are new to dog ownership, you may find yourself slipping into some bad habits while training your dog, which can result in behavioral problems in any breed. One of the fundamentals of dog training is to retain a calm demeanor.

Remember, that training your dog is a chance for you and your canine companion to bond; it should not be stressful for either of you. Below you will find some of the most frequent errors in dog training. If possible, it is best to avoid making these mistakes with your dog.

Housetraining Faux Pas

Housetraining is usually the first step in any dog’s obedience training. Therefore, it is helpful to start on the right foot, or paw. It is really important, when housetraining your dog, not to punish him, or her, for accidents in the house. If you chastise your dog, it doesn’t understand that you are angry because he, or she, has made a mess in the wrong place. As far as the dog is concerned, you are angry because he, or she, emptied his, or her, bladder and bowel. Subsequently, your dog will become fearful, making training infinitely harder, because the dog’s instinct will be to hide from you when he, or she, needs to go.

Obviously, it can be a difficult time and you may find it frustrating, but the key to success is being able to devote the time to teaching your pet. You cannot expect your dog to learn on its own. So, it is imperative that you take your dog out regularly, especially as a puppy, because he, or she, will need to go frequently.

Painful Punishments

When teaching any kind of obedience to your dog, the use of painful punishments is not recommended. Although, it must be said, some trainers advocate the use of electronic collars and certain forms of chastisement. It cannot be denied that some owners have great success when using these techniques.

However, punishing your dog can lead to fear, which can manifest itself as aggression. Moreover, punishment is unnecessary. By nature, dogs respect the alpha member of the pack and, if the alpha member is you, you will find that your dog is very eager to please. Therefore, it can be argued that the use of positive reinforcement (lots of praise for the desired behaviors) is much more effective than the use of chastisement for incorrect behavior.

If you are having trouble asserting your authority and your puppy is displaying signs of dominance and aggression, I would advice taking a tip from a mother dog. If her cubs are misbehaving, she grasps them by the scruff of the neck and shakes them briefly. This does not harm the dog, but it dislikes it greatly.

Calling the Dog for Punishment

Some owners, especially with a new dog, can find that they only call the dog when they want to punish it or perform an unpleasant, but necessary task, such as cleaning the ears and brushing teeth. Understandably, it does not take your dog long to get wise to this and, unsurprisingly, he, or she, will be reluctant to come to you when called.

The good news is that this is easy to fix, simply make sure that you call your dog for pleasant things, such as treats, dinner or even just a stroke. It is also a good idea to make a big fuss of your dog both before and after you have to do something that it dislikes.

Training a dog can be both enjoyable and easy. Obviously, the mistakes listed are only a few of the common errors made by dog owners, but you may find that by avoiding these mistakes, you will have a far more pleasant training experience and, what’s more, so will your dog.

Dog Training Fence 101

Do you have dogs? Do they give you the trouble of getting frequently out of your backyard and causing trouble to your neighbors. Do they give you constant headaches and fears that you would soon be facing claims for compensation for damages they incur?

The key with any dog, however, is just training. They are just like children, after all. Children need to be taught what is right from wrong at an early age, and dogs should be taught early too. However, dogs cannot think for themselves, and thus they require a different form of training: through stimulation and association.

There are a lot of ways to train a dog, and each method differs on what you want to train your pet to do. Treats are usually used, especially when one is trying to teach a dog a few new tricks. When you teach a dog a trick and he gets it the right way, he gets a treat as a reward. This instills into his mind that he is doing a job well done, and he should do it every time he is asked to if he wants to get a treat.

However, exceeding bounds is not a feat but is otherwise an offense. This calls for a punishment so that the dog will know that what he did was not called for and should be avoided the next time. Now, dogs must not be overly punished, because it will constitute animal cruelty and will subject you to legal action, which you are trying to avoid in the first place.

The answer? A dog training fence.

How Does a Dog Training Fence Work?

The dog training fence works by using radio signals as a way to discipline the dog and teach him about abiding by the territory given to him to roam free. It is somewhat similar to giving your children a spank each time they do something bad, but of course, you can't do that to a dog.

This is how it works. The system has a central transmitter that sends signals to a receiver collar worn around the dog's neck each time he oversteps his bounds. How does it do that? The owner installs a "trip wire," that is, a radio wire buried under the ground that acts as a detector that the dog is attempting to leave the territory. This wire is referred to as the boundary wire and is represented by a boundary flag as a reference for the dog.

When the dog is in close proximity to the boundary flag and the buried boundary wire, the collar will emit a warning tone to catch the dog's attention. If he turns back, then that's good. If he attempts to go past the flag, he will get a "static correction" stimulator via the contact points on his collar. This correction will give him a slight buzz and make him go back to where he came from.

The dog training fence is designed to be safe for use by both humans and dogs. The dog does not get a very strong electric shock because the voltage is set to safe levels.

The most common myth about a dog's eye sight, is that they are completely color blind. Dogs can in fact see colors just not as well as us humans. A dog vision does not recognize figures by their detail and texture like us humans, but instead by their shape and different form. A dog's sight is no where near as good as our sight as humans as well. It is a thought out myth by how well dogs hunt and capture their pray but they have just become good at what they can work with.

Dogs see different in color values different from us humans as well. To give the common example dog trainers sometimes define, a dog will not see a different in a red ball on green grass. The colors will blend in, but a different color ball such a pearl or peach color will be seen. It all kind of just depends on the color differences.

But on the other side of us seeing better colors than canines, they see movement a much better practice. Such things like animals or rodents on the move, dogs are very likely to see whereas us humans are more likely to just look at the still position objects.

On the flip side, canines can see incredible at night. To compare how us humans see compared to dogs, it is a huge differential fraction. Do not under estimate how well your canine can see at night. If you ever wonder how dogs run at such high speeds at night, this can answer it.

Begin training where there are few distractions and progress to teaching in all different circumstances. Use better rewards when an exercise is more difficult for him.

Train in different places and times If you only train your dog in your front room, standing at his side, just before dinner, it is likely that this will be the only time your dog responds to you. Instead, teach throughout the day, at all different times, places and situations. Teaching in the house will be easier, so do this first, then progress to teaching the same things outside.

Success brings success If we are successful at something we do, we are more likely to enjoy doing it and will make the decision to repeat it. A dog is just like us — if he achieves success, he will try again. A dog who is not successful is not rewarded. Therefore he becomes confused and uncertain, and less likely to enjoy being with you.

Gradually increase distractions When teaching something new, have as few distractions around as possible. Gradually increase the distractions so that your dog still wants to do things for you, no matter who else is around. For example, when first teaching your dog to sit, do this in a quiet part of the house, when no one else is around. Once he understands this, begin to do it in different places and when others are moving around. Then try outside, when there are no distractions. Progress to being able to ask your dog to sit during a walk when there are other dogs and people around.

Use rewards effectively We need to build our dog’s motivation. Whenever anything is difficult or new, use especially important rewards. As your dog progresses and begins to understand what you want, and wants to do it for you, vary the rewards to include less exciting ones, decrease them and give them on a random basis.

Tone of voice Old-type training involved bellowing and yelling in order to show authority. This is not necessary and can teach a dog not to listen. When you ask your dog to do something, you must mean it. There no point asking him to sit if you do not care whether he does or not. If this is the case, don’t say anything. Talk in your normal tone of voice, clearly and in such a way that you feel he will respond.

Do not repeat words If your dog is listening and wants to respond, you only have to use the word he knows once. If you are repeating yourself, it means your dog is not listening, does not want to do it or does not understand. Find out why he is not responding and work on this, rather than saying the same thing over and over again.

What is he learning? At all times, be aware of what your dog is learning. You should know what you are trying to teach, but is this what your dog is learning? If so, continue, but keep checking. If your dog is not learning what you want, you need to alter your approach in order to be successful.
