My keys fell into a crevice...help?
I got a metal detector recently and I went with my wife to get test it out in the Arizona desert, the middle of nowhere. My keys were attached to a Swiss Army knife and they dropped into a hole between two rocks. It was a deep 6 inch wide crevice between two boulders. My cell phone nor my OnStar system got any reception out there. We were stranded, and I needed to get those keys back. The boulders were too massive to be moved in any way and I didn't have any direct sight to my keys. The crevice was close to 15 feet, and I only had 6-7 hours of sunlight left. In addition to everything mentioned, I had a hammer, screwdriver, adjustable wrench, snippers, pliers, and 100 feet of nylon rope. There were also small pieces of wood and metal lying around. How did I get my keys out?
I hope this is a real scenario with a real answer - sounds interesting.
I would take the metal and make hooks, which I would string along a 20 foot section of rope.
Then I would literally "floss" between the boulders until one of the hooks caught on the keys and "flossed" them out.
Other options:
Take the shaft out of the metal detector and fish the coil (now hanging from a wire) down into the crevase until you got a "hit".
Then either fish with the cord and a hook on the end.
OR
take the batteries out of the MD (or used car batteries if close enough) and cut some wire out of it too. Wrap the wire around the wrench, attaching it to the batteries making an electromagnet which you would use to fish the keys out.
Next option:
Didn't get the keys out. Went back to the car, smashed the window with the hammer, punched out the lock and started the car with the screwdriver.
