Family vacations are an age-old past time that extends back hundreds of years. Whether you're traveling to the snowy mountains of Colorado for a skiing excursion, or soaking up the sun in the tropics of Florida, family vacations provide a level of excitement that is hard to match. It's always fun when visiting a new and unfamiliar place to see all of the different types of cars that people drive. In Florida for example, people drive anything from a Seabring Convertible, to an H3 Hummer in an attempt to showcase their particular styles. The great thing about personal style is that it can be incorporated into the car in a number of ways, one of the most popular being the expression of speech through the popular invention of bumper stickers.

Speculation suggests that a man named Forest P. Gill was the first person to develop the concept of bumper stickers in the 1920s. Gill had originally used wire to attach his bumper stickers to the backs of the automobiles, but later replaced the wire with adhesive, and this is still used today largely in part due to its practicality. Bumper stickers are a great way to showcase a person's personality and beliefs. Some display the political preference of the driver or their religious affiliations, while others simply state a funny joke or picture that are meant to make other drivers and passengers laugh. This is actually one of my fondest memories while going on a family vacation.

While driving around in our rental car, I remember sitting in the back seat when I was 10 and looking at all the bumper stickers on the beautiful cars that would pass me by. And to this day while driving, I still try to read every bumper sticker that I see. That's the great thing about bumper stickers today. They are a wonderful representation of our right as Americans to freedom of speech, and thanks to this, a family vacation will never be the same. So the next time your family decides to rent a car and take a trip to the wintry breeze of the Rockies, or the tropical beaches of Florida, make sure to keep your eyes open for all of the fun and excitement that bumper stickers can bring to the ride.
