What would be the purpose of getting a dog carrier/tote bag?

I was thinking of getting a dog carrier/tote bag for my 10 pound chihuahua. I have no idea why! I just know that people who have chihuahuas get these bags and the doggy sits in it and you look like a celebrity. I don't know.
