What tips and advice do you have for painting with acrylics?

I have been given a painting kit, using acrylics, for my birthday and as an absolute beginner I've no idea where to start. There are no useful instructions other than a few cautions such as wear old clothes and use in a well ventilated area.

They're pretty easy to mix and use, so just experiment. You can use a bit of water to change consistancy. Acrylics are plastic based and are really good for acheiving texture. Try applying the paint really thickly with strips of cardboard for a nice bold 3D texture, or 'dab' the paint with some fabric for another texture. You could also try doing prints with cardboard, or even chopped up fruit or sponge.

You can paint on pretty much anything, but I suggest either thick paper or canvas, or acrylic boads (quite cheap, you can get them in WHSmiths).

I always find them easiest to mix on an old bathroom tile, or a pallet if one comes in the kit. Always wash your brushes really well when you're done.

Many patients who have been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis choose to take complete control of their care by allowing different doctors to treat the two sides of the condition. While an orthopedic physician will be better trained to treat the arthritic symptoms, a dermatologist is more versed in the skin care aspect of treatment. When two doctors are correlating care for one patient, it is important that the patient be very detail oriented and have some good organizational skills.

Two Doctors – One Diagnosis

The major obstacle in correlating treatment between two doctors for one condition is the regulation of medicinal treatment. The orthopedic may prescribe one medication for the treatment of arthritis symptoms and the dermatologist one for the psoriatic symptoms. These two medications need to be scanned for potential interactions. This requires having the medications filled at the same pharmacy as well as letting both doctors know about the other prescription.

It is always a good choice to research potential interactions on your own as well. There are several trusted websites that allow patients to enter in the generic or brand names of their medications to search for potential interactions. While the pharmacist should be trusted with this judgment, there is nothing wrong with erring on the side of caution.

If possible, a better option (and one that is less stressful for the patient) is finding two physicians that are willing to physically talk to each other about potential treatments. Unfortunately, many doctors tend to be unfamiliar with this level of communication. One solution could be to find two doctors practicing under the same parent umbrella. For instance, a medical group of doctors may employ both a dermatologist and orthopedic who are more apt to communicate than two independent physicians.

Controlling Care With Combination Therapy

As patients are taking more control over their own care, they tend to look for treatments that offer more bang for the buck. If one lifestyle change will affect both the psoriatic and arthritic symptoms, that change offers more benefit than a change that only helps one half of the condition.

The same goes for medications. There are medications available that work to treat both the psoriasis and arthritis. These medications called DMARDs, however, have an increased risk of side effects and should be approached with caution.

Journaling for the Best Care

Without a doubt, the most powerful tool a patient can use to correlate care is a journal. This journal should be a place where symptoms can be noted, triggers hypothesized and doctor treatments marked. The patient should carry the journal to all doctor's appointments. Whenever possible, keeping a copy of the labels from medications taken in the past and those currently being used, even over the counter varieties, can help keep treatments safe and on the same page.

Patients with psoriatic arthritis do not have to choose between an orthopedic and a dermatologist. The best care is often provided by a physician who specializes in a given area. When it comes to treating psoriatic arthritis, both conditions need to be treated equally which means the patient may have to act as their own care liaison.
