Given the fact that Christmas is falling on a Friday this year, I really have no idea when my column is going to run. That said, no matter what, I can guarantee that today is going to be a longer day than yesterday. Yep, the winter solstice is behind us and the days are getting longer.

Cloth diapers.... Diaper Covers/Wraps vs. Diaper Pins?

My baby isn't even here yet and my mom and I are having "discussions" already!!

My mom is having a hard time picturing why you don't need diaper pins to hold a pre-fold in place. She is still imagining using the rubber pants that were used on me some 25 odd years ago. She really has not seen the new wraps/covers that are out there, (Bummis, Thirsties, etc.) and she just doesn't understand why you don't need diaper pins anymore.

Can anyone help explain this more clearly? I've tried and it doesn't seem to get through...
She has sort of seen a picture, but she still doesn't understand....

She can be pretty thick so I don't know if it will ever be "resolved" per se.

I've tried telling her that it holds everything in place like a disposable diaper and nothing really floats around in there.... I don't know how else to explain it!

Tough one...

Prefolds are folded into a cover and the cover is fastened onto the baby. It is snug fitting like disposables and will hold a prefold in place. Think of it kind of like underwear holding a nonstick sanitary pad in place. It works just fine.

Your mom is kind of right though. Older babies and younger toddlers often are too mobile to have a prefold stay where it needs to be inside of a wrap. It helps to pin or snappie the prefold onto a really mobile baby and then cover it with a wrap. Newborns are going to be fine, but as they get bigger things don't quite work as easily.

You have two options you can either buy one as there are many specialty stores on and off line or if you have a creative side you could make your own for the big event.

Below are 6 steps to making your very own baby diaper cake:

1. The first step is of course is you need to prepare all the items required for making the baby diaper cake.

Items like 50 or so diapers, 50 or so rubber bands, ribbon (I like to use 2 different sizes one around .5cm wide for tying around each individual diaper and another 3-4cm wide to put around each layer of the diaper cake) cake plate, double sided tape, paper towel cardboard funnel (this is used to hold the cake together by placing it in the middle and adding diapers around it alternatively you could use baby bottle) and finally whatever you have decide on to decorate the cake with e.g. baby towel, baby lotions, toys, baby spoons etc.

2. Roll the diapers, starting with the folded portion. Then place the rubber band around the diaper. Cover each rubber band with ribbon.

3. On the cake plate, stack the diapers around the paper towel cardboard funnel. The other option is to use a baby bottle a nice touch is to fill the baby bottle with lollies as this will make a nice surprise to find later on. Secure with ribbon.

4. Secure second and third stack of diapers (for second layer, secure two deep, for third layer, secure one circle of diapers).

5. You can wrap tulle around layers for extra decoration.

6. Decorate with your baby items.
