Do you think dog coats really help to keep dogs warm. They only cover their backs with a fastener under their?
their belly. I don't think they really need them do you? My dog has relatively short hair but my husband loves to take her for long walks. ( 45 minutes- to an hour or so) Can a dog get too much walking? It doesn't get real cold here but 30's aren't unrealistic.
1. Do dogs benefit from coats that don't cover their entire bodies? They can. Just because we humans wouldn't benefit from a coat that only covers our backs doesn't mean the same is true for dogs. My current dog is a short haired terrier. In really cold weather he absolutely benefits from his fleece "coat" (which just covers his back and sides). Obviously that doesn't insulate as well as one that covers the entire torso but most of the time a dog doesn't need that.
Here's an example to illustrate the point: watch some dogs curl up in their beds. Even though the bed just provides coverage on the belly and perhaps a side, the dog clearly enjoys the warmth provided by the bed despite their back being uncovered. It's the same principle with a traditional dog coat or cover.
2. Do dogs need a coat? Depends upon the breed, the size, and the weather. Dogs that are in good shape, bigger, and with longer hair are less likely to need a coat. Huskies and Malmutes work in frigid weather without coats. Other dogs without a double coat would die in weather like that.
3. Can you walk a dog too much? Hypothetically, too much of anything could be bad. Again, there are a lot of variables. If the dog's in good shape, than a longer walk isn't a problem. If the dog is older, it might have joint issues and a longer walk could be problematic. Some breeds (bulldogs, doxies, toys) aren't going to typically handle a 45-60 minute walk well. But then there are plenty of breeds or performance dogs who are in good shape who will eat up two 60 minute walks per day PLUS some additional workouts. You do want access to water (b/c the dogs not only get dehyrdated but the water helps cool them down). A 45-60 minute walk a couple of times a week for a young dog that is not in bad shape should be very good.
In summary: a 45-60 minute walk shouldn't be too long and a coat for 30-40 degree weather with a short-haired dog is probably important to have.
