Greyhound Dog
What is the fastest speed of a greyhound in a dog race?
Many years ago, a dog named OK Troy was clocked at 49 miles per hour by radar at Wonderland in Revere, Massachusetts. OK Troy was one of the great sprinters of his day, but can hardly compare to the great early sprinters of today.
There is no doubt in my mind that an early speed dog like Tims Crow was even faster, being a specialist at even shorter distances than OK Troy. An Australian dog, Zaability was also known for his tremendous straight-line speed.
Perhaps the fastest dogs on earth, however, are Irish coursing dogs. Because they course on a live hare over open ground, their speed is hard to measure, but there is no doubt that they possess, well, hare-raising speed.
I would estimate that top Irish coursing dogs are capable of speeds in excess of 55 mph for short bursts and perhaps even more. See the videos of Yes Jimmy Ha and Rith Gan Gaisce. These are the fastest dogs on earth.

If you're trying to make money at the dog track, you probably spend a lot of time going over programs. You may know all the terms and what the numbers mean. But do you know which ones really matter? Do you know how to use the ones that matter to separate the contenders from the non-contenders?
That's the most important part of handicapping a program. You're looking at the same information that everyone else at the track sees. The only way you'll beat the crowd is by knowing which information to pay attention to and which to ignore.
Let's face it, you don't have hours to go over a program. You have to be able to grab the factors that matter, compare them between dogs and make your picks in a few minutes. This isn't easy unless you're very good at organizing and sifting data.
You could find some software to do it, but I've never found any that worked as well as a smart handicapper with a sharp pencil. Like most dog players, I prefer to pick my dogs with old-fashioned methods, except for the approach I use. That's new.
Where I used to take all day to go over a program, I now take just a few minutes per race. I've found that when you eliminate some of the factors that don't matter as much, it cuts way down on time spent going over programs.
This new approach of organizing the information that I used to have to wade through has put the fun back into going to the dog track for me. I guess I'm just getting too old to put up with long, involved methods that have me fiddling with a calculator or wondering if I should pick dogs by speed or class or what.
