What is military grade?

It seems that everyone is advertising products that are "military grade". I am curious to know what qualifies as military grade. Are there guidelines that need to be met or can anyone claim that their products are military grade?

"Military grade" is probably a meaningless advertising term.

"Mil Spec" (military specifications) items must go through extremely strict manufacturing and documentation processes. Now, that doesn't always mean that Mil Spec items are somehow tougher or better than their commercial counterparts. But it does sometimes.
