What should you do if you suspect pet poisoning?
Poisons can be eaten, absorbed through the skin, and even inhaled. Poisonings can mimic many things. Some poisons act immediately, while others can take days to appear, which can make diagnosis difficult. If you suspect that your pet has been poisoned, time is of the essence!
Please call your veterinarian, 911 or the national poison center hot line immediately to avoid further illness or death to your pet.
When you call be sure to have the following information ready:
• Name of toxin ingested, inhaled, or absorbed
• Approximately how much of the toxin was ingested
• How long ago you suspect that your pet may have been poisoned
• Approximate weight of your pet
If the poison is known, take the box or package with you. Do NOT induce vomiting without consulting your veterinarian, 911 or the poison control center first.
Steve is executive director and founder of the non profit America's Animal Rescue Society that rescues and provides for animals during national and local disasters: providing food, vet care and temporary shelter.
