While most people don't think that they need to train a dog to use the stairs, it can often be a good idea if you do. If you think about it from the angle of a puppy you will see that the stairs can be quite a daunting prospect and also very difficult to work out. Instead of helping their puppy learn how to use the stairs a lot of dog owners just carry it up and down which can be bad idea as it teaches the dog to be reliable on you.

Like any sort of dog training it is never a good idea to encourage a bad habit from the beginning because it's then much more difficult to get rid of it. In this article we will tell you how to make sure you train your dog to use the stairs in the right way.

First of all you should start of only using the very lowest steps just in case there is an accident. Put your dog on the second or third step and then support the dog without actually carrying it. Once you have done this get a helper a few steps up with some treats and get the dog to slowly start to climb the stairs. Before long the dog will begin to see that it is capable of climbing the stairs on its own and should become easier and easier for you to encourage the dog to do so. Of course, some people don't want to have the dog upstairs at all and in this case you should ignore this lesson!
