Help, Harness causing bruising to my dog?

I use a step in harness for my dog but noticed yesterday that their is bruising under his legs where the harness rests. I Don't pull him hard at all, and he does not pull me either, just every now and then i might pull him a certain direction or he gets over excited to see a another dog or person and I have to pull him away, otherwise he is very well trained. Im concerned, I want to get him another harness that can prevent the bruising but when I tried the puppia Vest harness they run rather small and no size fits him, otherwise I think that would have been a perfect solution. Simply get rid of the harness. I use one when I want my dog to PULL. Get him a collar and leave the harness to the sled dogs and horses.
