When you say a command, look at your Golden in the eye. You will notice that he is not only listening to what you are talking about, he is also communicating with you most of the time. Your Golden speaks with you through body language. A bark, a howl, a wag of a tail or ear jerk means he is trying to tell you something even if you do not understand what he's trying to say.

Golden retrievers communicate in an interesting manner that we misunderstood oftentimes. There will be moments when you easily get agitated when he whines or barks. Instead of spanking him or telling him to shut up, try to figure out what caused him to act that way. When your dog barks persistently, you assume that he might just have seen or heard something that caught his interest. His reasons could be he is thirsty and wanted some water, hungry and is expecting to be fed or simply bored and wanted you to play with him.

Your dog destroys your shoes or chews on your shirt while you were away. You think he's angry or hungry. Goldens are highly sociable and afraid to be alone. They comfort themselves by mouthing on something that smells like their master. When a dog howls, some might think he saw a ghost or something scary. Truth is he hates to be alone and it's his way to communicate with his pack.

If your Golden shows fondness with your fridge and wags his tail when you come near, he is simply telling you that he is interested in some food that is inside the refrigerator. Goldens have very keen noses, meaning you can't hide a good smelling treat away from them. Just be careful in feeding human food as sometimes it can be harmful to Goldens.

Communication is essential in creating a bond between you and your dog. By understanding that Goldens have a pack mentality, you will know that they learn best when a leader or alpha dog takes charge. It is the same when he joins your family. You should demonstrate your leadership skills and he will follow your lead. If this was the other way around, he will dominate your household and it will be hard for you to correct his misbehavior.

In perceiving the world as how Goldens see it and being keen on how they interact with their environment that we humans can understand them fully.

If we look at things the Golden way, we begin to be sensitive to their needs and respond effectively to their notions. This way we establish trust and a bond that last a lifetime.
