Background
E-Collar training originated in the 1960's, made famous for it's widespread popularity among gun hunters. These collars, often times referred to as shock collars, have been made popular among domestic dog owners. Their ease of use and the ability to achieve quick results have contributed to their popularity.
With popularity comes criticism
Along with being widely used, they have also become widely criticized. The critics of e-collar training claim to be from two different groups: the animal rights arena, or the positive reinforcement training method. Both have valid arguments against this method when they evaluate 'trainers' who do not use the collars in the recommended way or do not understand dog training. Because of lack of education, many trainers use electronic collars incorrectly and bring criticism and, ultimately, hatred to their use.
Why e-collar training has a bad reputation
Over the years e-collar training has, without doubt, received a bad reputation in several circles of domestic dog owners and dog trainers alike. The cause for this is simple and involves one or both of two reasons:
1. They witnessed or heard second hand of a dog falling victim to a painful shocking.
2. They have never seen, heard or done research on training and the thought of a "shock" immediately fosters thoughts of abuse, likening it to a modern day electric chair.
The first, unfortunately, does happen. There are idiots in the world that misuse, either knowingly or because of lack of education, a collar and it results in a painful experience for the dog. Proper education and initial set-up can easily avoid any pain for the dog and result in a confident, well-trained dog.
What an e-collar does in the proper hands
If you are working with an experienced e-collar trainer, or better yet you become educated on the subject, an electronic collar delivers amazing results quickly. A properly set-up collar simply delivers a stimulus (the term shock has a negative connotation that is misleading) to the dog that can be compared to being bitten by a flea. It is an annoying nag. A dog will quickly realize that stopping a certain behavior eliminates the nag.

When done correctly, this training can deliver consistent results with absolutely no pain to your dog. You must familiarize yourself with the equipment and do your research. There are many valuable resources available to the aspiring dog trainer, whether you are doing it for personal use or for profit.
