Have you considered a career in law enforcement? Most people who are drawn to this career have a desire to serve the public and have a reliable income. The application process can be lengthy and the training rigorous but if you have a true desire to serve, the road will be well worth it. This article will give you more insight into how to become a police officer. Job prospects are looking quite good at the current time and into the foreseeable future. With the advancing retirement of hoards of Baby Boomers, many police departments will be hiring rapidly in the next several years. You can expect your starting pay to differ quite a bit based on where you will be working. There are about 18,000 police departments across the country and salary may range from about $36,000 per year to $44,000 a year, depending on the area. As far as steps to becoming a police officer, you may be riquired to have a high school diploma and perhaps some college education in the criminal justice field. You will also undergo a background check so your criminal record should be fairly clean. You can be rejected for such things as drug offenses or even multiple traffic violations. If you pass the background check, you will also need to undergo several rounds of testing. You need to pass some basic psychological, medical and physical strength and agility tests in order to be considered. This can also affect whether you are admitted to a city or state police academy.

If you want to know how to become a police officer, then I should also warn you that competition can be fierce. Most applicants never make it through the initial screening process but if you make it that far, you will likely succeed in your training and actually become a police officer. The academy program may range from 12 weeks to a year for completion and will cover many areas including firearms training, criminal law and cultural awareness. Once you have passed the testing and training, and put in some years of service, there are many opportunities for advancement. There are many areas of specialization that may appeal to officers who have patrolled for a few years so keep that in mind. You may also need additional training to qualify for other positions, in addition to experience.

What the small business needs right now is a new metaphor for doing business. All indications are that we're in an economic restructuring that's here for the long haul: you need a dramatic change that could be implemented next Monday which could save your company thousands of dollars quickly. If you were my CEO and I was your CIO, here are five imaginative approaches to leveraging IT to save you a lot of money in a little time.

1. Lock Asset and Software Purchases.

If you were looking to spend money on acquiring new hardware or software, don't. Cash is king - hang on to it; if anything, the industry will be hurting so bad around Q3 2009 that the consumer will have stronger purchasing power and OEM's will be offering steep discounts to cycle their excess inventory.

2. Reduce/Eliminate Licensing and Service Renewal Commitments.

Eliminate or reduce those recurring fees and charges. I have several dates marked on my calendar to end those recurring charges hitting my card every month for web-based services. Terminate or suspend automated renewals of software licenses, or negotiate a better deal with your provider. If your circuit/telecom term comes due in 2009, talk to your provider about lower-cost, higher-bandwidth options, or, consult with competitors: get more bandwidth at a lower monthly rate to preserve cash-flow.

3. Skype.

Skype offers unlimited calls, unlimited long distance, anywhere in the domestic US. Literally, you can pay $20 for a full year of phone calls for 2009. That's it. Use Skype to reduce cell and land-line calls and switch to a lower-cost mobile plan, saving cash. Calls on Skype can be routed from Skype to my mobile and to Skype Voicemail. Instead of paying your LD and LEC carriers for long distance and local calls - on top of what you're already paying your ISP - leverage your Internet bandwidth. Also, Skype can be used for IM, peer-to-peer calls on the Internet, and for video/audio conferences for up to 20 people. Really: re-think your phone expenses.

4. Efax.

Right now, you're paying at least $35/month for an analog line for the privilege to send/receive faxes on an ordinary fax machine. Ditch the line and throw away the fax: many LEC's offer an electronic fax option that can even keep your existing phone number. They'll receive the fax and route it to you electronically via email. Otherwise, take a look at your local server resources: chances are you're not using an electronic fax solution native to your small business server. As a last resort, think of subscribing to EFax which will route faxes to your email. Save on toner, maintenance of the fax machine, the productivity loss for handling paper documents, and the monthly expense of the fax line.

5. Work Anywhere/Telecommute.

Realistically: the modern knowledge worker can work from anywhere. Enable your team to work from anywhere by simply allowing it through policy; to exercise the privilege, have them sign a release if workman's comp claims trouble your decision-making, and tell them that you'll be reviewing them more frequently to provide corrective action over solo-behaviors. These are dire times: stop worrying about how to do it and just do it! You'll find that you can trust your employees more than you think. Meanwhile, leverage small business resources you might already have with your Windows network like Remote Web Workplace, Terminal Server, and Remote Desktop Services; use Microsoft Office Live, Zoho, or Google Apps for free and consolidate documents online, accessible from anywhere and secure. Limit driving, insurance payments, utility expenses, take advantage of municipal and state tax breaks for offering telecommuting options, move to a 4/10 workweek or offer variable flexibility in schedules to both inspire your employee and give them the flexibility to save a buck or two themselves.

Finally, just because you're cost cutting, don't cut your attention to security. Make sure that holes are patched, terminated employees' network access are suspended, that access to critical documents and files (read: your intellectual property) are patrolled and that confidentiality is maintained. It would take little time for a disgruntled employee to reach inside the network and cause disastrous harm - pay attention to the important details of managing your electronic assets.

By exercising just a few of these ideas, I'm sure there's some substantial cost savings to be had. Bold, innovative approaches to the way you do your business may very well be your saving grace when it comes to controlling expenses, as well as give you a leg up on the competition.

The throw-in during a soccer game is one of three methods of restarting play after the whole of the ball has crossed the entire width of the touch line. The ball crossing the touch line can occur either in the air or on the ground. The throw-in is the only time that outfield players can legitimately handle the ball.

Allowing players to kick the ball into play from the touchline would lead to virtual free kicks. However, not restricting the throw-in would change the nature of the sport altogether. As a result, Law 15 regulates the throw-in for soccer.

Procedure

The throw-in should be taken from the point where the ball left the field of play along the touchline. The player taking the throw must face the field on play and have both feet either on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline. He must also use both of his hands and deliver the ball from behind and over his head. The ball is in play once it enters the field of play; whether on the ground or in the air.

The foul-throw

The foul-throw is a common type of throw-in infringement at lower levels of soccer. This throw does not conform to the throw-in procedure. In other words, any one of the following can result in a foul-throw:

i) The player not facing the field of play at the moment he takes the throw (for acrobats).

ii) One or both feet are completely off the ground when the throw is taken.

iii) Throwing to one side of your head or another (as opposed to directly over).

iv) Delaying the release of the ball until the hands are well past the forehead.

There can be several other manifestations of foul-throws. Ultimately, a foul-throw must contravene the specifications for a proper throw. Players are allowed to run-up before throwing or perform acrobatics once they perform the throw-in correctly at the end.

Other infringements

Beside the foul-throw, the thrower can commit other infringements associated with the throw-in. An opponent can also commit an infringement during this method of restarting play.

The thrower cannot play the ball a second time unless it has touched another player. If this is done, an indirect free kick shall be awarded to the opponent where the second touch occurred.

If the thrower throws the ball into the thrower's goal, a corner kick is awarded. If the ball is thrown directly (no touch by any player) into the opponents' goal, a goal-kick should be awarded.

The throw-in is not the time to exact revenge on an opponent or the referee. If you take a throw-in properly but deliberately smash the ball against an opponent, teammate or official in a careless, reckless or dangerous manner, you may be sanctioned. However, if the ball is played off an opponent in a manner that is not careless, reckless or dangerous, play should continue.

When the ball touches the ground before entering the field of play and the throw-in was properly taken, the throw-in is retaken by the same team. If the throw-in was not taken properly and this happens, the opposing team should retake the throw.

The ball can enter the field of play in the air. If the ball swerves wickedly in the air after a throw-in and went out of bounds before even touching the ground, the other team will restart play from a throw-in.

Opponents should be at least two metres from the point on the touchline that the throw must be taken from. Failure to adhere to this can result in a warning first and then a caution (yellow card). If the thrower fails to take the throw-in from the spot indicated by the referee, the throw-in can be awarded to the other team.

Officiating

The assistant and referee share the responsibility of determining if the ball goes out of play along the touch line and which team is entitled to the throw. Eye contact is necessary for the referee and his assistants to not give conflicting signals. The assistant generally has more responsibility for the side of the touchline that he or she is patrolling, while the referee handles the other side. However, when doubt arises, either can look to the other for help.

Signaling

Referees simply indicate which direction the throw is going with their hands and arms. Assistant referee extend their arm at an angle in the direction of the throw. If the assistant referee is unsure, the flag should be raised to indicate that the ball has gone out of play. Then assistant should then follow the referee's decision.
