Take the lead and be the Alpha Dog…

Dogs naturally have a pack mentality. There's no getting around it. You must establish yourself as the pack leader.

Some people find it difficult to create dominance over their puppy. Afterall, your puppy is just "sooo cute". How can you look at that adorable face and be stern?

The simple truth is your dog WANTS to be led.

All dogs have either Alpha or Beta qualities. If your dog has strong Alpha qualities, he will compete with you for leadership. Let the dog win this battle and you'll be following HIS rules.

You need to be consistent with your dog training, rule setting and dominance or your dog will feel like he needs to take the top spot on the hierarchy.

Conversely, if your dog has a Beta type personality and you don't establish clear rules, he will become anxious and confused. Without a leader the dog may become fearful, confused or aggressive.

As a dog owner, your responsibility is to train your dog to understand that YOU are the "Alpha Dog" of the pack.

By acting like the "Alpha Dog", your dog will be able to instinctively relax and just follow your lead.

Additionally, your family members or other owners must establish themselves on the hierarchy of the pack. Your dog should understand that he is the lowest on the chain and it is his place to follow everyone's lead.

This will create a friendly, obedient and submissive dog that is respectful of your commands. Really the point of all this is to have your dog's respect and obtain control.

Everything you do from the moment you get your puppy will either build upon your Alpha role or take away from it.

That's why it is so important to have a clear understanding of rules before you get your dog.

When you stick to hard and fast boundaries for your dog's behavior, he will begin to understand what he can and can't get away with. This also includes feeding him on a set schedule.

As he realizes YOU'RE the boss, he will comply effortlessly with the kind of behavior you expect.

Part of this strategy involves the immediate correction of disapproved behavior with acceptable behavior.  A good example of this is when your dog is chewing on one of your shoes and you replace the shoe with an approved chew toy.

You must also immediately follow the bad behavior with a sharp "No" and ALWAYS encourage any good behavior with "Good Boy".  This taps into the power of positive reinforcement dog training.

I expand on this in other articles. But for now, know that these two phrases are "trigger commands". Over time, they will become incredibly powerful so use them appropriately.

Now you have a much better understanding of how dogs think. So don't feel bad about enforcing rules to your dog. It's actually comforting to him.

By establishing your role as the leader, you make your dog's life less chaotic and can train him knowing you are doing the right thing.

Bird toys like ladders are available in abundance in shops. Toys that can decorate the bird cages as well as amuse the birds can easily be made at home also. People love to own birds. To keep these pet birds safe, they need cages. And to keep the birds happy within the confinement of cages, they have to be given toys to play with. Always remember that when you are putting birds within cages, you are cutting them off from their natural habitat, and heavily curtailing their space for movement. The downsides of this incarceration can be undone by keeping a bird inside good bird cages and providing it with enough bird toys.

When out in the wild, birds use their beaks and claws a lot while foraging for food. In addition to that they may nip at anything that catches their fancy or may chew twigs. Rainbow ladders are available in multiple colors. Bridge ladders and bend ladders are mostly horizontally placed. Birds can perch on these toys as well as nibble at them. All these toys come with hooks at the ends so that they can be easily hung inside the cages.

Besides the bird toys available in the market, anyone can make toys at home. Coconut shells colored with harmless vegetable dyes will make good toys. Those who have access to palm trees like coconut can fold and pleat its elongated leaves into fiddles, snakes, balls, or arches and put one or two inside the bird cages every day. Nipping on such natural products is absolutely harmless for birds. These leafy toys will be very economical as well because they can be thrown away everyday and replaced with fresh ones.

Lengths of colored ribbons can be pleated into patterns and hung around bird cages. They will beautify cages and will also double as bird toys. Multicolored merry-go-rounds that are hung atop babies' cradles can be hung on the ceiling of cages as well. These too will do the double job of decorating the cages and being toys. Small plastic containers that birds can open and close will also make good toys. Balls of wool are among the homemade bird toys that birds love to play with. Things that have done even a short stint as toys can never be reclaimed for human use. They breathe their last in bird cages

What is the most indestructable dog chew toy out there, besides Kong?

Kongs are your best bet, there is also a similar product called Rhinobone, made by Nylabone. It's made of similar rubber as a kong, but in a bone shape.

I would definately avoid the Nylon/Plastic Nylabones if you have a relentless chewer. I have a female Jack Russell that could chew for days straight, and she has significant damage to her teeth from the Plastic type Nylabones.

Try buying a plain wood stick at your local pet store. Lather it in peanut butter and then roll it in dried corn, sunflower seeds, etc. Put it in the fridge and let it harden and, ta da, you've got a yummy chew stick!

Also you could try these yummy recipes I've come up with:

1. "Peanut Drops"- Freeze a few drops of peanut butter on a plate...when they are done they will be solid treats (not to be over given btw). (NOTE: No need to thaw before giving)

2. "Fruit Mash"- Put bananas, strawberries, peach, grapes, and blueberries (or basically any fruit you want besides citrus) into a bowl. Mash with fork (but not to an absolute pulp), drain juice, serve a little in the food dish at a time. (NOTE: You can cover the extra up with foil or plastic wrap and put it in the fridge to be served at a later date. Also do not blend in blender, this will basically make it a pulp, and it will not be able to be given to the hamsters)

3. "Peanut Crumblies"- Simply crush PLAIN peanuts into crumb-ish size and add to food. (NOTE: Peanut Crumblies are only to be added to regular food about once a week maximum or it will cause obesity)

4. "Ice peanuts"- If you have an ice tray (how you make ice cubes) put a single PLAIN peanut at the bottom of about half the empty cube holes, fill them with water, let them freeze. Give them to your hammy, they will have fun licking the cold ice (especially in the summer), and getting to the yummy peanut inside will be an extra treat, YUM! (NOTE: You might want to put the cube in some kind of water dish because it will melt and I don't know if you really want a watery mess all over. Also one cube at a time is just fine, it might be fun to see which hamster gets the peanut)

Cuttlebone, which is the bone of cuttlefish, is rich in calcium and is a necessary nutritional supplement for birds. Some bird toys manufacturers make perches and bells out of cuttlebone so that when the birds chew it, they would actually be getting all the nutrition that they require.

Foraging bird toys are also a welcome addition to any bird cage. With foraging toys, birds are trained to search for their food that is kept hidden within the rings or slits or drawers of a multilayered toy. Foraging bird toys may be in the form of a carousel, or interlinked containers, or sliding rings or in any creative form that manufacturers can think of. Disposable foraging toys can also be made at home if the bird owner has the time and creativeness to think of treasure hunt ideas for the bird using leftover paper cups, containers, fruit rinds, twigs, newspaper bits etc.

And when it comes to the question of doing things oneself, it is not just foraging toys that can be made at home but many other type of bird toys as well. Those who have access to long varieties of leaves like palm leaf can make any number of disposable woven toys like whistles, diamonds, rings, snakes etc. with it. Broader types of leaves and twigs, stuck together to form boats, or crocheted together to form paddles or ladders, will also make excellent bird toys. Homemade or factory-made, bird toys are a must for bird cages, both from the beautification perspective and utility perspective.
