One of the biggest dilemmas people go through when looking for a dog crate for their new pet is, "what size should I get." Crate Cage Kennel
My adopted dog was supposed to be crate/kennel trained but he hates going in there when I leave. Suggestions?

He is a four year old male pug that was neutered last month. He won't willingly walk into the cage. He whines and barks as soon as he is in there and continues after I leave. He has even scratched up and bent the bars somehow. I've heard so many people say that dogs like crates/kennels because they are den animals but I've never had a dog that didn't hate being left in one.

Leave the kennel open.
Put him in for 5 minutes every day and stay with him. Then give him a treat and let him out after he eats it. Then when he becomes comfortable with this don't stay with him but still reward him when you come back. Whenever you give him toys put them into the crate. When he remains comfortable leave him in there

Get a bigger kennel. Also leave him in their with a bone once in a while.

Crate training puppies may have been one of the methods that have been suggested to you, but is a training technique that is frowned upon by some dog lovers. This article aims to discuss the arguments for and against crate training your puppy or adult dog, so that you can make an informed decision about the house training method that best suits both you and your dog.

Arguments Against Crate Training Puppies

• Dogs are pack animals, and if you confine your dog away from her new pack, it can cause anxiety and even behavior problems
• If not done correctly, your puppy may see crate training as a form of punishment

The Case For Crate Training Puppies

Of course, there will always be the moral argument "is it right to keep my dog confined in a cage, and this is a question only you will be able to answer. The fact is, if your dog is loved (and knows that it is loved), treated well and given the time it deserves, crate training puppies can be a perfectly acceptable house training method, and is certainly one of the fastest ways of housetraining dogs.

By all means, look into the many different ways to teach your dog to stay clean in the house, but do not rule out crate training just because someone else says it is cruel.

How do you get a puppy to stop whining when she is in a crate (cage)?

I just bought a new Maltese puppy. I was told that she would easily adjust to apartment life and that this breed were good dogs for being left alone. She is adjusting wonderfully to being potty trained but when I leave during the day and at night I crate her as instructed by pet store. She whines and yelps all night to the point that I can't sleep and neighbors are complaining. I leave her plenty of toys but she will yelp all day until I get home or let her out the cage. I was told to potty train unless I am able to closely watch she should be crated. When I'm home I always let her out.

Crating is fine....puppies will do that....keep something with you smell in there with her....and you have to ignore it at night....as was stated going to her she will think of it as "reward" for yelping. Make sure to give her plenty of attention when you are home. She will soon stop. also you might think about getting here a friend like another small dog....puppies always do better in pairs....

6 hours is a little long. you might consider getting a dog run outside for her so she can at least have a little space to run around. How I got my puppy use to a crate is everytime you put them in it give them a safe treat to eat so they see the crate as "oh its treat time!" and also put a blanket over the crate so its dark. They will go to sleep after a little bit and the more you do it the more they will get use to. My dogs don't cry at all when its crate time anymore. Hope this helps! Good luck!

As any dog owner will tell you, dogs absolutely love to curl up in a special place where they feel secure and safe. This is an instinctive hangover from the days when Wolves built 'Dens'. This behavior is often referred to as 'Denning' and it is essential that your dog has somewhere to feel safe. This can often be achieved through the use of a dog crate. Before you rush out and buy a dog crate, there are a few things that you should know.

It is easy to view a dog crate from a human perspective. To us, a dog crate may look like a prison or confined space but to your dog, it may represent something completely different. If introduced correctly to your dog, a crate may become a safe haven, somewhere your dog can retreat to for some alone time. When family life is getting too much, having a bolt hole for your dog is vital.

Dog crates come in many different shapes and sizes. Manufacturers have produced very diverse products to satisfy the market. Your average crate will be made of a durable thick plastic with vents or openings around the sides to allow ventilation so that your dog can breathe easily and also these prevent the build up of condensation. Due to the fact that the dog crate may be used in the home, you can now buy decorative ones and even ones that double as a side table.

In addition to plastic crates, there are aluminum ones, wicker and plush soft ones with a fleece lining. Whichever type you choose, you need to consider the size of crate that you may need. If your dog has some growing to do, or has specific needs due to disability or injury, you need to account for this when deciding on a size. As a rule, your crate should be large enough that your dog can stand up and turn around with at least four inches to spare. If you own a puppy and you are unsure how large he\she will grow, get information on the average adult size for your dog breed and then account for the worst case scenario. It is better to have a crate that is too big than to end up with one that leaves your dog feeling cramped and confined.

Once you have bought your crate, you will need to let your dog know that this is going to be her special place. The easiest way to achieve this is to introduce your dog gradually to it's new crate in small easy to manage steps.

As with any dog training method, bribery seems to be the order of the day. Sit next to the new crate and call your dog to you. When she comes, give plenty of praise and give your dog her favorite treat. Next, try placing one in the mouth of the crate and repeat the same process of lots of praise and positive reinforcement. The third stage is to throw a treat into the cage and allow your dog to venture in to get it. When you do this, issue a command like "In your kennel" so that this may be used as a way to get your dog into her crate later on.

The final stage that will cement the new crate as a special area is to have your dog eat her meals either in or at the mouth. Associating the crate with food will instill an automatic sense that this is a special area for your dog. Gradually your dog should start using the crate under her own conviction until eventually, you may have trouble getting her out!!

One essential thing to remember though is to NEVER leave your dog in it's crate for more than six hours as boredom can lead to behavioral problems. Also consider that if you have a puppy, you should remove the puppy from the kennel to relieve itself regularly.
