Crate Training?

We have moved into a new house and from what I've heard, crate training is awesome, making the dog feel secure.

It is never to late to crate train. I like the plastic crates because they are den-like and cozy for the dog. Wire ones are great for travel, so they are more versatile.

Line the crate with towels or blankets for comfort.

Crate training is wonderful. It gives your dog a place of her own, where she can feel secure and relax, as well as make life easier on everyone.

Start slowly. Bring the crate home, put in the blankets/towels and some treats. Keep the door open, and praise/treat her when she shows interest in the crate. If you get a kong and stuff it, you can put that in there to lure her in.

Don't keep her in it long to begin with! And do not take her out while she whines/barks or makes a fuss. This will encourage that behaviour and you will never have peace and quiet! Take her out while she is quiet, and do not make a big fuss out of putting her in/taking her out of the crate. Keep it calm and uneventful.

Freezing a stuffed kong and putting it in the crate will keep her busy while she is in it. Also, make sure you take her for a good walk prior to putting her in their for a lengthy amount of time.

Also, putting an article of clothing that smells like you in the crate can help her adjust.

A simple Vari Kennel can be more than just a safe haven for your pet. It can cave your house during Christmas. The movie, "The Dog Who Saved Christmas" reminded me of our dog who almost ruined Christmas. It was unavoidable that we leave him alone in the house for a number of hours on the day before Christmas. He was good about everything except for the tree, and he must have gotten caught on the string of lights. When my mother arrived home late in the evening, the tree was lying on its side across the living room and the decorations were broken and/or chewed. We were lucky that he apparently did not swallow any of the pieces, and that the house did not catch on fire. It was just a good thing that we had another artificial tree in the basement. My mom spent most of the night re-decorating the tree. Come Christmas, morning no knew and my mom just kept quiet.

Elves are a good thing to have as helpers this time of year; as was the Vari Kennel which housed him for the rest of the night. If only we would have taken the time to place him there before leaving, we could have avoided the catastrophe. He loves his crate and enjoys nestling safely on his very own blanket. We still have the same large Vari Kennel and have really enjoyed its durability and how easy it is to clean. In the summer time, we just turn the hose on it. It is more to refresh it than because it is dirty, but during hunting season, it gets pretty muddy.

One of the best things about a Vari Kennel is its portability. Our dogs have been trained to go inside when company comes over to visit and to travel in it during hunting season. It serves as sleeping quarters on those cold nights when he cannot remain in our outside enclosure. It is not difficult to lift onto the bed of the pickup truck and secure it for travel to the marsh. After the Vari kennel is secured in the back of the truck, if trained properly, your pet will willingly jump up into the bed of the truck and then head right for the kennel knowing he is going off on an adventure with his trusty master. The extra large size is roomy enough for our large hunting dogs to stand up and turn around in, which is what you should be looking for in a dog crate. We all know that before a dog lies down to rest he will turn around several times finding just that right position. In the right size Vari Kennel, he is not cramped for space, and there is room for a water dish so you don't have to worry about him becoming thirsty on the long drive back home.

what if I build a raised floor in the crate?

My puppy is in his crate longer than he can hold it and unfortuantely I cannot let him out to avoid it.
The crate is not too big so that's not the problem.
Here are my options, which is best:

Why did you get a puppy if you could not commit the time to take care of his basic needs? If you continue to crate him day in day out you will have more to worry about than housebreaking as he grows up.

Dalmatians are a bit hyper so maybe that's where her behavior is coming from. If you really can't take it, you should rehome it.

1. Your kids are too little to be left unsupervised with the puppy.
2. A dog will soil its crate if it is too big. Shrink it up with the divider, as long as the dog has room to lie down in.
3. Let the pup go out after eating, and once an hour while crated. Take up the water a couple hours before bedtime. Put the crate in your room overnight so you can take the dog to go pee when it cries.

Crate training your dog is not, and should never be seen as, a way to punish your dog.

This type of training is appropriate for most dogs. Crate training a dog is a wonderful way to give your furry friend a safe place to go when he is tired, when you cannot be with him, and will save your carpet and your house for many year. Crates, kennels, cages have become the modern age answer to the doghouse. Crate training can be fun for the puppy if you make it a POSITIVE experience. Crate training can be an efficient and effective way to house train your dog. Crate training also helps teach your dog to have bladder and bowel control. Crate training your dog provides them with a profound sense of security. Crates come in every size, shape, material, and color.

Den DNA

Dogs have a very strong "den" instinct. Dogs are by nature den creatures. The dog crate, properly introduced, becomes your puppy den. The Den is an integral part of the wild dog upbringing and safety zone. The crate helps to satisfy the den instinct inherited from his den-dwelling ancestors and relatives. If a crate is properly introduced to a dog (or puppy) the dog will grow to think of the crate as a safe haven. Most puppies will not soil their "den." Your dog can enjoy the security and privacy of den of his own to which he can retreat when tired or stressed. Your dog will grow up a little more confident if they know that they have a safe place to go to when the world becomes too much for them to handle. Ultimately, a crate is to serve to replicate the sense of a den.

Have patience and faith. Crate training your dog is the right decision. The peace of mind and the enhanced dog safety that crate training your dog will provide is priceless. We all know that the reasons to coach your dog are countless and crate training your dog is crucial among them.

Doggie Elimination and Potty Training

Dogs do not like to soil their sleeping quarters if given adequate opportunity to eliminate elsewhere. Short term confinement to a crate is intended to inhibit your dog from eliminating when confined so that she will want to eliminate when released and taken outside with you. Keep in mind also that your puppy does not know what is expected and must be shown the proper place to eliminate and when.

Reminder: During housebreaking DO NOT allow the pup outside to eliminate alone or let them loose in the yard. The key to house training is to establish a routine that increases the chances that your dog will eliminate in the right place in your presence so that he or she can be praised and rewarded. This decreases the chances that your dog will eliminate in the wrong place so that he or she will not develop bad habits.

If you are considering crate training your dog and are looking for a the right crate then do your homework. Most wire crates have an adjustable divider so you can adjust the divider as the dog grows. There are many types of crates available. I recommend a simple wire crate which will serve you well for a couple of years depending on the breed of dog you have. Have patience and faith, crate training your dog is the right decision. The peace of mind and the enhanced dog safety that crate training your dog will provide is priceless. We all know that the reasons to coach your dog are countless and Crate Training Your Dog is crucial one among them.

Crate Kennel

Crate or kennel?

I work during the day so I'm wondering if it would be better to keep my dog in a crate inside or let her stay outside in the kennel? The kennel is shaded and she doesn't use the bathroom in it but if it's better to use a crate indoors I can do that. Thanks.
There's a doghouse in the kennel too. she's a small dog (an Eskimo Spitz). What size crate is good for her?

Here's what I did with my Jack Russell's. During the day when everyone was gone we would put them in the kennel with food and water. And at night, I would put my dog in his crate so he'd learn to be potty trained and respect the crate. He barked a lot. Now he's good in the kennel and the crate. But during the day, kennels are good. It's not good for dogs to be foreign to the outdoor sounds. Hope this helped!!

We have 5 indoor cats. They have their own room, in our home, with 2 cat condos & 3 automatic litter boxes. They very generously share it with my desk, computer & filing cabinet. In order to give them "safe" access to the outside, we built them a two room outdoor kennel, connected to our house. We have several bird feeders around for them to watch (sort of like kitty TV).

1. In the back wall of "their" room is a pet door.

2. Attached to the pet door, on the outside is a walkway the size of the door, enclosed with chicken wire, which attaches to an entry hole cut in the kennel wire.

3. Attached to the walkway is a 2" X 6" X 5' long board, covered with sisal rope descending to the ground inside the kennel.

4. The kennel has two rooms constructed by erecting two 7'W X 13' L X 6'H dog kennels.

5. A secure roof is made by constructing 2 sections of roof, per room, 8' X 4' of 2" X 2" wood frame & 1 sheet of corrugated PVC plastic cut in 2 sections & attached to the roof to allow water to flow off the roof.

6. These two sections are attached in the center of each room to form the pitched roof. A section of pipe, like the kennel frame, is attached to the top of the kennel frame with risers, making the center of the roof about 8" taller than the sides, allowing for the pitch of the roof. The roof sections are attached by strapping the frame of each roof section to the center pipe with long electrical ties.

7. Since the pitch in the roof leaves openings at each end, between the roof & the kennel top rail, a plastic mesh material is attached in the opening to prevent escape.

Cats love to climb trees, so, sections of cut tree limbs are configured in each room of the kennel to give them trees to climb & allowing space on each where they can lay & watch their outside world around them. Also in the kennel is a perch with scratching posts.

I designed two outside condos made of plastic dairy crates that will be weatherproof. Sides were cut out to make tunnels through which the cats can walk and then ascend to the next level. The first condo is four levels high. Each level has at least one crate on the end where a cat can lay. They can also lay inside each crate forming the tunnel. Since dairy crates have no solid sides, to each horizontal exposed crate surface I have attached a square piece of plastic with a square of outdoor carpet glued to it. This gives them the solid surface on which to walk or lay. The condos are created by strapping the crates together with electrical ties. These are strong and will last indefinitely.
