Dog training is not rocket science and is not as difficult as you think. It is certainly possible for ANY dog owners to train their dogs themselves provided they put in adequate amount of effort. The principles listed here are universal to dog training of any dog breeds, be it sporting, working, toy or terrier, any dogs - big or small, pup or old, any Owners - competitive or leisure.

In short, if you are serious about training your dog and demand Only success, You MUST apply these principles. No "If" No "But". Get the basic right first before you start to train your dog!

Consistency

Consistency is very important during training and correcting unwanted behavior. Always use the same "command" for a specific task you require of your dog. Don't confuse him by using different command for the same task.

Once you've establish some house rules such as - keeping the cooking area out of bound to your dog, enforce them constantly. If the dog learns that he can get away with it now and then, your previous efforts will go down the drain. Lastly, make sure everyone in the family accept and enforce your rules consistently.

Timing

Timing is critical to successful training. Praise your dog whenever he is doing something right. As expected, reprimand him on the spot and to the point whenever he misbehave or fails to response to your command. Praise and reprimand that happen later will have no effect on your dog.

* There are 2 main schools of thoughts concerning the timing of correction when your dog misbehaves. I called the first school of thoughts the "Direct Approach". It simply requires you to reprimand your dog on the spot if he misbehaves. This is more of a tangible and straight forward approach to training your dog and is easy to understand for most trainers.

I called the second school of thoughts the "Endurance Approach" as it'll require you to ignore your dog when he misbehaves. Using the cause and effect to your advantage, this approach requires you to ignore the dog, especially when he misbehaves to seek attention and encourage you to pay attention to your dog only when he's a good boy.

Attention Factor (Endurance Approach)

Dogs love attention and are hugely motivated by it. Unlike man, dogs do not know how to differentiate between positive and negative attention. They see things in a simple way. If a certain action gets reaction and attention, you'll bet they repeat it over and over again. (Cause and Effect)

Unfortunately, for most dog owners, we more often than not give our dogs negative attention. For example, "Do you let him out of his crate when he groans?" or "Do you give chase when he runs off with your socks?" These are negative attentions given to the dog and is certainly motivating his bad behavior.

Fortunately, the opposite is true if you pay enough attention to your dog when he behaves himself. When the dog understands that he'll get attention only when he's behaving, he'll learn that only good behavior attract attention and he'll repeat his good behavior always.

Focus your attention on your dog only when he is behaving; praise him or give him a treat, let him know that he's getting the attention. If this technique is used correctly, he'll be a well-behaved dog for a long time to come. Nevertheless, this approach is probably not for the short temper and requires you to go through an endurance ordeal. Imagine your dog chewing up your sock in your presence. "Endure Dude!"

Training Mood

You need to be in the correct frame of mind before you train your dog. Never train your dog when you are under the influence of alcohol or drug. Also try not to train him if you've a bad day or not in the best of your mood.

If you've just argued with your sweetie or got a telling off from your boss earlier on. You would most probably take out your frustration on him and threaten your relationship with him in future.

Do remember to apply these dog training principles constantly & you'll be half-way through to successful dog training.

The Petsafe instant fence utilizes a revolutionary concept that offers the safest and simplest form of pet containment. The installation process itself is very easy. The system's transmitter can simply be plugged in any convenient area in the house or garage. Your dog can wear a lightweight receiver collar that will detect the signal emitted by the transmitter. While the collar is receiving the signal, your dog can freely play in the contained area. Once the pet approaches the boundary, a simple beep will warn him. If he doesn't heed the beep, a startling light static energy will shock your pet. However, this is harmless.

Training Your Pet

Your pet may avoid frequent harmless shocks if you train him to learn his boundaries. An instructional video on how to train your dog comes with the Petsafe instant fence kit. After adjusting the containment area to your preference, you can mark the boundary by placing the training flags within the edges of the signal area. The kit also comes with 50 small training flags.

To start off, you can walk your pet around the boundary using a leash while holding the collar. While walking around, you can shake the flags while saying no to your dog. You can even let him hear the collar's beep. You can also use conditioning to enhance learning by alternately giving out scraps of food while training. You may do this for a couple of days until you think your dog has learned enough.

Testing Your Pet and the System

Now that you have trained your pet numerous times, you can let your pet wear the collar and walk around the boundary on his own. You can even let him cross the boundary and feel the correction. Once he is corrected, you can quickly pull him off, point the flags again, and say no to him. Through this, he will remember the corresponding correction every time he crosses the flags. You can repeat this process every day for a few weeks, and once your dog has learned its new boundaries, you can already remove the flags.

Factors to Consider while Dog Training

Your dog should be at least six months of age before starting the training, although it also depends on your dog's breed. As soon as the owner observes that the dog is accepting the correction, one call pull out his pet and redirect him through the sit-and-stay command.

If you want to take your dog for a walk out of the boundary, you can create the concept of "invisible gate." You can take out the dog through the "invisible gate." To do this, you can put a long leash on the collar and turn it off as well. Remove the collar and command the dog to the "sit and stay" position near the area that you designated as the invisible gate. One can come out of the invisible gate as ask the dog to "come." When you see your dog chewing the collar, you can pull him off and command him to the sit-and-stay position.

The internet is overflowing with an abundance of Dog Training tips.  However it seems that so many articles out there overlook the MOST important one.  It’s the one tip that will set the stage for the rest of your dog training efforts.  The most important dog training tip is knowing how to be the “Alpha Dog” so your little buddy will respect you and follow your commands with obedient attention.  This article is going to show you how to accomplish just that.

Take the lead and be the Alpha Dog…

Dogs naturally have a pack mentality. There's no getting around it. You must establish yourself as the pack leader.

Some people find it difficult to create dominance over their puppy. Afterall, your puppy is just "sooo cute". How can you look at that adorable face and be stern?

The simple truth is your dog WANTS to be led.

All dogs have either Alpha or Beta qualities. If your dog has strong Alpha qualities, he will compete with you for leadership. Let the dog win this battle and you'll be following HIS rules.

You need to be consistent with your dog training, rule setting and dominance or your dog will feel like he needs to take the top spot on the hierarchy.

Conversely, if your dog has a Beta type personality and you don't establish clear rules, he will become anxious and confused. Without a leader the dog may become fearful, confused or aggressive.

As a dog owner, your responsibility is to train your dog to understand that YOU are the "Alpha Dog" of the pack.

By acting like the "Alpha Dog", your dog will be able to instinctively relax and just follow your lead.

Additionally, your family members or other owners must establish themselves on the hierarchy of the pack. Your dog should understand that he is the lowest on the chain and it is his place to follow everyone's lead.

This will create a friendly, obedient and submissive dog that is respectful of your commands. Really the point of all this is to have your dog's respect and obtain control.

Everything you do from the moment you get your puppy will either build upon your Alpha role or take away from it.

That's why it is so important to have a clear understanding of rules before you get your dog.

When you stick to hard and fast boundaries for your dog's behavior, he will begin to understand what he can and can't get away with. This also includes feeding him on a set schedule.

As he realizes YOU'RE the boss, he will comply effortlessly with the kind of behavior you expect.

Part of this strategy involves the immediate correction of disapproved behavior with acceptable behavior.  A good example of this is when your dog is chewing on one of your shoes and you replace the shoe with an approved chew toy.

You must also immediately follow the bad behavior with a sharp "No" and ALWAYS encourage any good behavior with "Good Boy".  This taps into the power of positive reinforcement dog training.

I expand on this in other articles. But for now, know that these two phrases are "trigger commands". Over time, they will become incredibly powerful so use them appropriately.

Now you have a much better understanding of how dogs think. So don't feel bad about enforcing rules to your dog. It's actually comforting to him.

By establishing your role as the leader, you make your dog's life less chaotic and can train him knowing you are doing the right thing.

Let's face it; there are millions of different kinds and varieties of dog toys on the market. How do you know what to choose?

First, you need to decide what kind of toy you are going for. Are you looking for a cheap toy that your dog can destroy or are you looking for an indestructible dog toy that they can't? Are you looking for a challenging toy that will make them think and keep them busy or are you looking for a toy to be used in the water?

Cheap dog toys can be found anywhere, while they are good for a dog that just tears it up right away, wouldn't it make more sense to get a toy that is durable and lasts longer? While these durable toys may cost more initially, in the long run they are actually more cost effective because you buy less of them.

Durable Dog Toys are hard to find, but there are options out there. Toys such as the Goughnut as guaranteed, so even if your dog does destroy it, you can get a replacement one for free! Also Tuffy's brand dog toys have a scale of 1-10, 10 being the toughest. They are stitched many times so that your dog can not tear it apart. Dog toys made out of fire hose are also very tough and perfect for dogs that manage to chew through them a lot. There are also Tuff Balls tennis balls that are very durable and non toxic, unlike many dog toys out there.

Interactive dog toys are good for dogs that have a never stopping mind and need something to keep them busy. Toys such as the Treatstik and Canine Genius Leos are made to have food and treats put in them and then your dog has to work to get it out. The Nina Ottosson dog toys are puzzle dog toys that your dog has to work to get rewards. They come in many levels so whether your dog is a beginner or advanced, there is a level for them that will keep them occupied. The Hide a Toy series (puzzle dog toys) are good for dogs that like to tear apart toys- they allow you to put the toy back together after your dog thinks they have destroyed it!

Tug and fetching Toys need to be durable and long lasting. The Pentapulls from Doggles are a high quality toy that can stand up to the rigors of two dogs pulling on it. Water wubbas can be used for playing fetch on the lake; they are large and brightly colored!

Stuffing less dog toys are good for dogs that main purpose when they get a toy is to rip out all of the stuffing. They look just like an average dog toy, but they do not contain stuffing, thus dogs do not have the want to tear the toy apart and it will last longer.

Poochieheaven is the place to go for indestructible dog toy and puzzle dog toys. We also have a Interactive dog toys.

Dog Chews

What does it mean when my dog chews on grass.?

Does it mean she is sick? She is a Collie/lab and is 12 years old. She also gets these real bad sleepies in her one eye.

If her eyes are doing that I would have her checked by a vet to be sure she doesn't have an eye infection. The vet told me that the reason that the dogs eat grass is because the grass has chlorophyll in it which will usually make them throw up but not always, they only eat grass when their stomachs are upset.Good luck.

Help dogs come with an assortment of skills: guiding dogs, hearing dogs and service dogs just to name a few. The basic premise of their training are all similar: condition a dog to help people that cannot do their day-to-day chores on their own because of certain impairment. These dogs will serve the people that have these impairments in the specific ways that are needed based on their skill, personality and each dog's specialized training.

There are two types of dog training that these animals have to pass: Self-training and program training.

Self-training is done by the owner of the dog and consists of the general skills most owners naturally teach their dogs. The dog gets to know the person that will be their owner and master and to learn what that person's handicaps and limitations are. The dog will develop a natural bond with their owner and take pride in helping them to accomplish the tasks that they need help with. Program dog training is also done with the owner, but with the aid of a trained dog helper expert that is know legible in the steps and skills that are essential to their important work. We know that having time between the dog and the owner will encourage or increase their relationship – but the training is also essential for the dog to be useful.

You can train young and old dogs, some prefer to train dogs that are aging in particular instances where an older dog might be more suitable – in other instances a younger dog might be more appropriate. There is no one size fits all.

As an owner you can train a dog in your own techniques that suit your family. By spending time together to increase your good relationship, you dog will be able to adapt to almost any situation. You can easily teach the dog commands such as: come, sit, no and stay. As time goes by you can train them to do things such as turn on and off lights and close and open a door.

One thing we do know is that our pet is one of our best friends, an effective companion and will go wherever we want them to go. They also provide emotional and mental support when we need someone to talk to – dogs really are man's best friend.

What is the most indestructable dog chew toy out there, besides Kong?

Kongs are your best bet, there is also a similar product called Rhinobone, made by Nylabone. It's made of similar rubber as a kong, but in a bone shape.

I would definately avoid the Nylon/Plastic Nylabones if you have a relentless chewer. I have a female Jack Russell that could chew for days straight, and she has significant damage to her teeth from the Plastic type Nylabones.
