By natural instinct, dogs are den animals. It is bred in their genetics to want to go to their dens as a place of safety. It is also bred in their genetics to keep their dens clean which is why they are such great housebreaking tools. When human beings bring dogs in to our world, we tend to forget that dogs are not humans at all. They are dogs. We forget the natural instincts that dogs have been born with and try to treat them like our children. This can be very hazardous to the human – dog relationship. One of the biggest things that humans forget is the natural instinct of dogs to have a safe haven like a den. One of the best tools we have when we bring dogs into our world is the dog crate.

A dog crate if used correctly can be your dog's den in the human world. We should be willing to learn proper training techniques to better our relationship with man's best friend. Using positive reinforcement, such as giving your dog treats for entering his crate, can be overwhelmingly beneficial in the crating process. Dogs remember associations, and associating going to his or her crate with a reward, will plant a positive image of that place in your companion's brain. Remember that this can be reversed as easily as it is implemented. Never make your canine go to his or her crate as a place of punishment. It will only leave a bad association of that place for your pet. If your dog's crate is always associated with a positive place, that crate will eventually become a safe haven for her, a human replication of the den. She will want to go there to sleep and relax.

With all of this said, believe me that there will be difficult times. The first few nights with a puppy can be treacherous. Don't let the crying and howling break you. It is hard. I know from many personal experiences, but whatever you do, don't give in. It will only make matters worse. Not only will it make it difficult to associate the dog crate with a positive experience, but you will emulate a sense of weakness to your dog. Dogs are looking to you to lead them, teach them, and be their guide just like your children do. You don't give in to every temper tantrum and crying fit your children throw, do you? Stay strong, be positive, and your dog will not only respond to crating well, but will also be willing to obey and learn anything you want him to. Dogs are intelligent creatures, and the sky is the limit when it comes to teaching them. Implement a dog crate early on, and you will simplify all training that follows.

Camping with dogs? In the snow?

My boyfriend and I go camping every year in Yosemite. This will be the first year with the dogs. What are your experiences, positive and negative? Our dogs are currently 10months (male lab) and 8 months (female border collie). We are going in a few weeks and then again for Christmas when there will undoubtedly be snow, each trip will be 2-4 nights. The park requires that dogs be kept on a 6'ft leash at all times. Both dogs walk very well on leash, but I am worried about them disliking being on leash basically 24 hours a day. Our tent is big enough to put their crates in. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!!

I've been camping in the colder months.. and though I've never had to keep the dogs tied up in the winter, I had a lot of fun! (Bring plenty of blankets, though!) In delaware, the campgrounds are deserted in the winter months, and my dogs are trained to stay on-site, so there's really no problem. I understand that Yosemite is a national park, so they are probably busier and stricter. But, I still think it would be an excellent idea, as they won't miss being off leash in wolf and bear country! Also, My dogs like to sleep at the top of the sleeping bags, and my fiancee and I huddle down in the bottoms.. keeps everyone happy! Have fun, and don't forget to accustom your pups to wearing dog booties so that they won't get frostbite.. and bring at least 3 pair per dog with you! A couple dog coats wouldn't go amiss, either.

Thank you to anyone who gave a reasonable answer. I've actually found a crate built for mastiffs,Danes,etc.

To those of you who accuse me of cruelty-

Bite me. I'm a HUGE animal lover. This isn't for crating my dog all day long-It's for the car,okay?

So either bugger off and leave me be or answer this-

Which is better- ahving the dog fly through the windsheild or be confined with an uncomfortable seatbelt OR ride in a HUGE crate with a THICK bed and be safe and comfortable???

I'm not getting an adult-I just want one he can grow into. He's already potttytrained.

i would go for the largest or second to largest and to the people who said no to crates, they are a very good training tool and much safer than confining so rooms where there are hazards such as electrical cords and other objects that they could chew and possibly eat, its not like we put them in there all the time its when people are gone. i dont feel comfortable keeping my dog in the kitchen not to mention the one time i did try it he climbed over the gate while i took a shower, i would rather be safe than sorry just my opinion

When I was growing up and raising many different dogs as house pets, we never had a dog crate. So when I learned how to potty train a puppy using crate training it was a brand new experience.

I was amazed at how quickly I could train my new puppy about where and when to "go to the restroom" by using a dog crate.

At first I thought the dog crate would be too confining and possibly unkind for my new puppy. But after doing a bit of research I learned that dogs really enjoy having a small comfy place to call their own. Kind of like a den that gives them a place they can be completely safe and secure.

In fact, I found that when I would leave the crate door open during the times I was actively supervising my puppy during the day, that often the puppy would go to her crate by choice. She just loved her little comfy bed.

When you crate train your puppy you limit their choices regarding when they relieve themselves and this helps to train them as to the appropriate place and time to go potty.

During the time you are teaching them potty training you either want them in one of three places:

- Outside of the crate, and under your constant supervision and care.

- Inside the crate with the door closed

- With you, outside, relieving themselves in the proper place of your choosing. A crate helps to teach your puppy to hold off on peeing or pooping until you take him or her outside to go.

A heated dog house when it gets cold outside or a dog house heater will keep your beloved canine warm, healthy and comfy.

We have 5 indoor cats. They have their own room, in our home, with 2 cat condos & 3 automatic litter boxes. They very generously share it with my desk, computer & filing cabinet. In order to give them "safe" access to the outside, we built them a two room outdoor kennel, connected to our house. We have several bird feeders around for them to watch (sort of like kitty TV).

1. In the back wall of "their" room is a pet door.

2. Attached to the pet door, on the outside is a walkway the size of the door, enclosed with chicken wire, which attaches to an entry hole cut in the kennel wire.

3. Attached to the walkway is a 2" X 6" X 5' long board, covered with sisal rope descending to the ground inside the kennel.

4. The kennel has two rooms constructed by erecting two 7'W X 13' L X 6'H dog kennels.

5. A secure roof is made by constructing 2 sections of roof, per room, 8' X 4' of 2" X 2" wood frame & 1 sheet of corrugated PVC plastic cut in 2 sections & attached to the roof to allow water to flow off the roof.

6. These two sections are attached in the center of each room to form the pitched roof. A section of pipe, like the kennel frame, is attached to the top of the kennel frame with risers, making the center of the roof about 8" taller than the sides, allowing for the pitch of the roof. The roof sections are attached by strapping the frame of each roof section to the center pipe with long electrical ties.

7. Since the pitch in the roof leaves openings at each end, between the roof & the kennel top rail, a plastic mesh material is attached in the opening to prevent escape. icon wink Dog Crate Kennel

Cats love to climb trees, so, sections of cut tree limbs are configured in each room of the kennel to give them trees to climb & allowing space on each where they can lay & watch their outside world around them. Also in the kennel is a perch with scratching posts.

I designed two outside condos made of plastic dairy crates that will be weatherproof. Sides were cut out to make tunnels through which the cats can walk and then ascend to the next level. The first condo is four levels high. Each level has at least one crate on the end where a cat can lay. They can also lay inside each crate forming the tunnel. Since dairy crates have no solid sides, to each horizontal exposed crate surface I have attached a square piece of plastic with a square of outdoor carpet glued to it. This gives them the solid surface on which to walk or lay. The condos are created by strapping the crates together with electrical ties. These are strong and will last indefinitely.

During the first few months in their new home, puppies require a great deal of supervision. Using a dog crate can help you to prevent accidents during times when the puppy can't be watched. Housebreaking is easier to accomplish when accidents are prevented in the first place! Using a dog crate combined with a regular feeding and exercise schedule will make housebreaking go smoothly.

If puppies could have their way, they'd choose to run free all the time, so you should expect some initial resistance to the dog crate. Puppies have to learn to accept periods of confinement. They won't like it right away but acceptance will come.

Most puppies will whine or bark during the first few days of being put in their crate. Once they begin to accept this new restriction on their freedom, they quiet down and actually learn to enjoy it. Growing puppies need to alternate between periods of activity and rest throughout the day. By keeping the puppy on a regular schedule of feedings and exercise, you can control his natural rest periods. If you put the puppy in his crate when he's already tired, he'll get used to his new bedroom even faster.

In the beginning, the puppy should only be expected to stay in the dog crate for 2 daytime hours at a time. During his periods out of the crate, your puppy will need plenty of playtime, attention and loving. Puppies should be given at least an hour between crating periods when they can play and explore and romp. This helps to burn off their seemingly unlimited puppy energy and helps them understand that crating will only be temporary.

Special treats can help make his new bedroom a pleasant place to stay. Give your puppy a small treat every time he has to go into his crate. Make his new bedroom comfortable. Get him a soft clean but durable blanket. Get him a selection of toys and rotate them. Puppies can get bored easily and switching the toys around makes them seem always new. Teething puppies love chew toys and all dogs love a Kong stuffed with peanut butter. They can spend hours trying to clean it all out.

Puppies learn quickly when their behavior is associated with a reward. Behavior that doesn't result in a reward often disappears. It's normal for many puppies to bark or whine when first being crate-trained. If you let your puppy out of the dog crate while he's upset, you'll be rewarding him for barking. The next time he's supposed to go in his crate, he will bark again because that's what got him out the last time. Be patient and the whining will stop.

For many puppies, just ignoring their whimpering will be enough to make them stop. Some puppies might need a harsh-sounding "No!" to help them get over their tantrums. Remember: don't take him out of the crate until he's had some quiet rested time.

A dog crate is a fabulous tool when it comes to housetraining your puppy. The discipline aspect comes from a puppy's innate urge not to urinate or defecate in its den. Even young puppies prefer to move as far away from their sleeping quarters as possible to relieve themselves. Usually, a puppy who relieves himself in his crate was sick or just couldn't wait any longer.

Also, crating a puppy when the family is away during the day, administers a passive form of discipline by preventing a curious puppy from chewing up things he shouldn't chew. A dog crate will keep your puppy safe and out of trouble.

How Do I Get My Pppy Used to a Dog Crate/Cage?

I have had my puppy for 7 weeks now. When we first got her we aloud her to have the run of kitchen and hall way, we had a dog safety gate which she can now get over!! and she also started chewing the electric wiring! we have therefore brought her a crate. I

am wondering what is the best way to get her used to it after she has been used to having the run of 2 small rooms? She will be in it for approximately 6 hours a day while im at work. My partner is off work at the moment for 1 week so is there anything we can do to get her used to it? I dont want her to cry/whine and whinge next week when my partner goes back to work

6 hours is a little long. you might consider getting a dog run outside for her so she can at least have a little space to run around. How I got my puppy use to a crate is everytime you put them in it give them a safe treat to eat so they see the crate as "oh its treat time!" and also put a blanket over the crate so its dark. They will go to sleep after a little bit and the more you do it the more they will get use to. My dogs don't cry at all when its crate time anymore. Hope this helps! Good luck!

As any dog owner will tell you, dogs absolutely love to curl up in a special place where they feel secure and safe. This is an instinctive hangover from the days when Wolves built 'Dens'. This behavior is often referred to as 'Denning' and it is essential that your dog has somewhere to feel safe. This can often be achieved through the use of a dog crate. Before you rush out and buy a dog crate, there are a few things that you should know.

It is easy to view a dog crate from a human perspective. To us, a dog crate may look like a prison or confined space but to your dog, it may represent something completely different. If introduced correctly to your dog, a crate may become a safe haven, somewhere your dog can retreat to for some alone time. When family life is getting too much, having a bolt hole for your dog is vital.

Dog crates come in many different shapes and sizes. Manufacturers have produced very diverse products to satisfy the market. Your average crate will be made of a durable thick plastic with vents or openings around the sides to allow ventilation so that your dog can breathe easily and also these prevent the build up of condensation. Due to the fact that the dog crate may be used in the home, you can now buy decorative ones and even ones that double as a side table.

In addition to plastic crates, there are aluminum ones, wicker and plush soft ones with a fleece lining. Whichever type you choose, you need to consider the size of crate that you may need. If your dog has some growing to do, or has specific needs due to disability or injury, you need to account for this when deciding on a size. As a rule, your crate should be large enough that your dog can stand up and turn around with at least four inches to spare. If you own a puppy and you are unsure how large he\she will grow, get information on the average adult size for your dog breed and then account for the worst case scenario. It is better to have a crate that is too big than to end up with one that leaves your dog feeling cramped and confined.

Once you have bought your crate, you will need to let your dog know that this is going to be her special place. The easiest way to achieve this is to introduce your dog gradually to it's new crate in small easy to manage steps.

As with any dog training method, bribery seems to be the order of the day. Sit next to the new crate and call your dog to you. When she comes, give plenty of praise and give your dog her favorite treat. Next, try placing one in the mouth of the crate and repeat the same process of lots of praise and positive reinforcement. The third stage is to throw a treat into the cage and allow your dog to venture in to get it. When you do this, issue a command like "In your kennel" so that this may be used as a way to get your dog into her crate later on.

The final stage that will cement the new crate as a special area is to have your dog eat her meals either in or at the mouth. Associating the crate with food will instill an automatic sense that this is a special area for your dog. Gradually your dog should start using the crate under her own conviction until eventually, you may have trouble getting her out!!

One essential thing to remember though is to NEVER leave your dog in it's crate for more than six hours as boredom can lead to behavioral problems. Also consider that if you have a puppy, you should remove the puppy from the kennel to relieve itself regularly.
