How big should a diaper bag be, and what should go in it?

I'm trying to make a realistic guesstimate of how much junk we'll want to lug when we leave the house with a baby...

I'm looking at two bags; one is 11"H x 15"W x 6"D, and the other a bit smaller, 9"H x 10¾"W x 4¾"D.

Am I right in thinking that the little one will be fine for quick trips around the neighbourhood, and the larger one okay for longer outings?

What's in your diaper bag? And what's essential (er, okay -- diapers!), and what's just nice to have?

I had two bags, for just the reason you mentioned. The bigger one held an extra set of clothes and extra food, they both had the baby basics: diapers, wipes, couple toys. It was really easy just to grab and go with the small one for trips to the park or just the store. The bigger one I used for day trips, or if I was planning on visiting friends for a few hours. Good Luck!

Coleman Excursion

This water resistant rolling duffel is a powerhouse. The Excursion is water proof and tear resistant. The in-line skate wheels have ball bearings and curb guards. The self-locking push button handle is able to be hidden, and there is a large U-shape top opening for easy entrance and access. The main compartment is spacious as is the side compartment. If quality and durability are important to you, then you've found a winner in the Coleman Excursion!

Delsey'Helium Hyperlite

Don't be fooled by its whopping size; the Helium is ultra light, yet sturdy and resilient. Its exterior features include, but are not limited to, a top lid pocket, zippered front pockets, skid plates for added protection, Guardian self repairing zippers, integrated ID tag, and easy grip strap handle on each end of the bag. The interior doesn't displease; the main compartment is roomy, fully lined, and has tie down straps to keep everything in order.

Carryon On Storm Chaser

The storm chaser meets airline travel requirements; this means that you can roll this duffel right up the airplane ramp and slip it right on in the overhead bin. This basic rolling duffel has a retractable handle, four pockets, straps, a lifetime warranty, and weighs six pounds.

TCL Extreme Duffel

You most definitely can't roll this up your airplane's ramp, but it does meet check in requirements. This gargantuan duffel stands upright, and you will be able to maintain organization during the busiest of trips. The duffels' full length skid rails protect it from wear and tear and the telescopic handle extends to 18'.

Ricardo Beverly Hills Melrose Anniversary Collection

If you don't want a humdrum color and require a smaller duffel, this colorful rolling duffel may be the one for you. Its vibrant colors caught our eyes, and we can't stop staring! This rolling duffel has many extra pockets for you tuck away your MP3 player, a few magazines, make up, socks, and other accessories. It's perfect for children, too.

Clava Half Moon Rolling Duffel

The Half Moon has easy to carry top handles that have snap closures. The Half Moon also has a side handle or adjustable/detachable shoulder strap.

Post-holiday rehab: Celebrate the small, unshiny triumphs
It's cold out, too early, and I wake, dull with the anticipation of routine: this morning I'm a gerbil on a wheel. I raise myself vertical and move to the kitchen to make oatmeal, not because I've resolved to make hot breakfasts, but because my border collie's thyroid pill has to sit in his gut for half an hour before he can have food.

So you've taken the plunge and booked a family 'get away from it all' Christmas break...but now you're realising exactly what you will be 'away from' and are wondering how you'll transport the 'family Christmas at home' experience to another country!?

Here are our top 10 tips for taking tots away for Christmas, to make sure you all have a wonderfully relaxing holiday...

1. Involve your kids in the travel experience. Get out a map and show them where the family is going. Talk about how many miles you are travelling - just like Santa himself! Let your kids help pack their suitcases and even shop for Christmas gifts for family members with whom you'll be holidaying.

2. Make sure they leave a note at home letting Santa know of their temporary location so he can be sure to find them on Christmas Eve. If Santa will be unable to hop down a chimney, let the kids leave suggestions as to an alternative method for their delivery. And of course, don't forget to leave out a little tipple and a mince pie (or perhaps a local equivalent!) at your destination. He's sure to be hungry after the extra trip from your house!

3. Find out whether the larger online retailers deliver to your destination. You can even get deliveries gift wrapped. Just remember to plan for how you'll get them home! Perhaps try to keep a suitcase or fold away bag empty and keep everyone's luggage to a minimum (at least you won't usually need swimming gear at this time of year!) Try to plan gifts that are small and lightweight to pack.

4. If you can't take all the gifts, talk about how children in Europe get theirs on Epiphany instead. Maybe Santa will accommodate your travel plans and leave smaller than normal packages, or perhaps leave some but with a note that there are still some more surprises waiting at home under the tree.

5. Make much of creating the same 'Christmassy' atmosphere they've left behind when you arrive - most properties will provide a tree, decorations, etc for Christmas guests.

6. Take some CDs of Christmas songs and stories along for the journey to keep the festive spirit alive en route.

7. Check out the local Christmas markets or plan to visit a theme park that opens during the holiday season. Train rides, tours of lights and visits to see Santa are some of the things you can expect to find no matter where you go on your Christmas holiday.

8. Pack a small bag of supplies for your tots to make decorations for your holiday home. Or pop to the local supermarket on arrival to stock up on the makings of some batches of Christmas biscuits or mince pies (though you may need to pack a jar of mincemeat from home!)

9. Before your trip, read about how children celebrate Christmas in other countries. You can perhaps introduce some new traditions during the holiday, to take home with you for future Christmases.

10. Enjoy the relaxation that being away from your home environment brings - no racing around visiting friends and family, no sale shopping, no 'let's use the time off to decorate the spare room' - just chill out and enjoy time as a family!

By now everyone has seen or heard about the show Hoarders – but even if you don't have a true psychological problem with holding onto rooms and rooms of junk, just about everyone has things that they either have been meaning to or really should get rid of. Typical places that we all stash these things away and out of sight (but never out of mind) are closets, basements, attics, garages and even under our beds. Additional places that often need a good clean out are cabinets, storage boxes/containers and shelves. By following a few easy steps and applying some general guidelines, de-cluttering your home can be very simple and extremely satisfying, especially when you are all finished.

First off, you need to take inventory, walk around your house or apartment and decide how much stuff you will potentially be throwing away – a good way to look at it is if you have a small amount, say 3-4 trash bags full with nothing large or bulky that needs disposal, then you can start right away and be done in a few hrs. If you have a medium amount, 3-7 trash bags and a few bulky items, you might want to consider renting a 10 yard dumpster from a local dumpster company. It takes the hassle out of multiple trips to the disposal center or trying to bag everything up in a way that your curbside service will take it. If you have more than this, you definitely need to rent a dumpster. Your local dumpster company can help you determine how large of a dumpster you might need, based on your larger items, so just ask for their help. Additionally, you should consider that some of the things, especially larger items, might be worth something and either find a charity of a consignment shop to bring them to. The Salvation Army will often come to your home and pick up larger items that they think they might be able to sell in one of their stores.

The next step is to map out a game plan, which room needs the most help? This is where you should start! Dive right in and then each room thereafter will seem easier and easier. Don't forget about recyclable material – go online to your local municipality and print out the list of exactly what you can put in a bin to be recycled. It is the responsible thing to do for the planet and might make you feel a bit better knowing that things will be reused to make new things in the future. Mark a large bin or plastic trash can for this purpose and tape the recyclable items list to the front as a reminder. Everything else can be loaded into a wheeling trash can and when full, easily wheeled outside to be emptied into your rented dumpster (or tied up and put out on the curb for the garbage truck).

Things you are going to keep should be categorized, but not necessarily put away – it is often helpful to get all the junk out first before tackling the job of organizing and finding homes for the things that you want to keep. This is also a great time to dust, vacuum and wash windows as you will be moving things around and stirring up the dust anyhow.

If you have a hard time deciding to save or to toss, make a "maybe" pile – then once you have finished with the room, take a break, grab a glass of water and a snack and think about those items – then go back and make your decisions. The general rule of thumb is that if you haven't used it in 6 months or more and/or you didn't remember that you even had it, you don't need it – toss it in your dumpster or give it away. Once all of this is finished you will be left with a sense of accomplishment and a clearer head (not to mention a cleaner living space)! "Less is more" as the old saying goes, so get to work.

What is this bizarre old oriental printed floor mat made of?

I just bought a very old house (1941) and I have been pulling out the old 80's carpet. I found what I am pretty sure is asbestos-containing vinyl tiles in the bathroom (which I already covered up with linoleum for now. But then I found this bizarre floor mat under the carpet in the living room. It was about 7' x9' and was printed to look like an oriental rug, but it was not cloth. It was a thin rigid mat made of god knows what. It was lacquered on the decorative printed side and felt like thin rubber or vinyl. The backing looked like thin particle board, kind of the texture of brown paper bags. It was about 1/8" thick and brittle. I cut it into pieces so I could remove it, and now I fear it may have been an asbestos-backed vinyl floor mat. Otherwise, why would they carpet over it.

Has anyone ever seen/heard of something like this and know what they were made of? Thanks.

It was likely some old linoleum rug. Linoleum flooring was manufactured by oxidizing linseed oil to form a thick mixture called linoleum cement. Cooled and mixed with pine resin and wood flour to form sheets, and baked in huge ovens.

You can see vintage linoleum rugs at Second Hand Rose, http://www.secondhandrose.com/linol/main.htm

Second Hand Rose claims that none of their vintage linoleum rugs contain asbestos. However, some linoleum flooring was made with asbestos. It depends on the manufacturer and age of the linoleum whether or not it contained asbestos.

The only way to know for sure is to take a small sample and send it in for testing. Your local Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) or something like that can provide you with the names of certified testing labs.

Usually as long as you don't sand or grind the flooring or use power saws to cut it then you'll probably not release much asbestos dust, if it contains any asbestos. Whoever carpeted over it probably had no idea whether or not it contained asbestos. They probably just didn't like the pattern or it had become worn, dull and dirty.

If you did sand it or do something that you think may have released asbestos dust then mopping it frequently with a damp mop will pickup dust that may have formed.

You have de-cluttered your house. You have clipped and mowed your lawn so well it could be on the front cover of Homes Beautiful magazine. You bought a cheery Welcome mat for your front door, inviting potential buyers in where they will see your home in "Buy Me" condition.

But what about that lingering odor you can't smell, but others have oh-so-politely mentioned (or not).

In these days of adult-onset allergies and fragrance sensitivities, spraying a room with the latest commercial air spray may be a turn-off for buyers. However, there are a number of natural ways to freshen, or at least deodorize, the air in your home with products readily available at your local grocery store.

White Vinegar

For years, white vinegar has been well known to remove odors of all kinds – from animal urine to strong cooking aromas to fresh paint. * Do not use cider or red wine vinegar as they may stain.*

Spray solutions using a mixture of one teaspoon of vinegar, one teaspoon of baking soda and one pint of water are a ready-made, natural room freshener, with no lingering smells. This works to rid rooms of stale cigarette smoke, strong perfumes, and cooking odors.

A small dish or bowl of vinegar will draw odors from the room such as fresh paint. If a person has been ill in a room or car, especially children, mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a bowl and place it in the affected area for several hours, or overnight, to remove lingering odors.

Charcoal Briquettes

Place 2-3 fresh briquettes in an empty can or box close to the source of the smell to absorb odors within 48 hours. Replace every month.

Coffee Grounds

Fresh or used, dry coffee grounds can be very beneficial for deodorizing your home. Place the grounds in your refrigerator to absorb odors, similar to using baking soda.

If a room in your home has lingering scents, open a fresh can of coffee grounds and, if possible, close the doors and windows for a day or two. The grounds will absorb the smells.

Another suggestion is to place one or two cups of fresh coffee grounds in a paper lunch bag, then staple shut. These bags of freshness can be used anywhere stale odors are hanging around.

Baking Soda

In addition to being used in conjunction with white vinegar for cleaning, baking soda has been used for generations to deodorize the home. It is especially good for removing stale smells from carpets before your home is viewed by buyers.

Simply sprinkle baking soda over the entire carpet. Leave for at least one hour, or as long as you can if you will be out of the home during the day, or overnight. Then vacuum the carpet completely.

The Louis Vuitton Mahina brings you luxury and simplicity without skipping a beat. The Mahina, named after the moon deity of Polynesia, is roomy in every model with its supple pulled up leather. This LV Mahina bag in XL is the perfect slouch handbag, combining a carefree shape with a sophisticated fabric. The Mahina calfskin leather is renewed with delicate perforation to spell out the LV monogram print.

As in the past, LV handbag clientele are not willing to part with the signature pattern, so the fashion House has been ingenuitive in coming up with fresh representation of it. Sometimes they choose a different fabric, like denim or patent leather, as in the Monogram Denim and Surya bags. Sometimes they take the monogram and stone wash it or deface it with graffiti or jokes.

And sometimes they leave the classics to do their own thing - and in this case reinvented the classic! Styled in extremely supple leather and gathered at the points of the strap, the Mahina skims the body so you can hardly feel it's there. And the new bag in comes in a new shape, wider compared to its Mahina sisters. Gentle pleats and subtle details, it sure makes a bold yet discreet statement.

It offers generous capacity and has ravishing facets such as the signature Louis Vuitton bag press lock, a zipped closure for added security, an internal phone and patch pocket with D-ring, microfiber lining and comfortable shoulder straps.

Touted as a classic, the Louis Vuitton Mahina handbags have become a rage among celebrities, with Cameron Diaz and Madonna flaunting these brilliant creations. In previous seasons the LV bag made a fresh appearance in white and elephant gray.

Its predecessor, the Surya bag, named after the Hindu Sun God, is indeed as radiant as the sunshine. The Surya picks up where the LV Mahina left off by giving the bag a bold new direction. The shiny patent leather in red or dark gray doesn't go unnoticed. Fall 2009 brings with it a small but tasteful array of colors in black, chocolate, mahogany, and cognac. But the crème de la crème has to be the XL in a divine copper. Softness and volume define the new XL. Calf leather trimmings and microfiber lining adorn it along with side buckles for adjusting the size of the bag, so you'll never have the wrong size bag. Brushed copper hardware compliment the bag.

Retailing at $3,550, this bag seems to be only for the Madona's of the world. But with a good replica LV Mahina bag you too can call this classic your own. With all the detailing of fine Louis Vuitton handbags, a replica LV Mahina will blend perfectly with your style and status.

Top quality replica designer handbags, 100% leather, luxury designer brands Replica Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada and more.
