Today, the Trimmer Insurance Agency's building sits on the NE corner of Memorial Drive and Union Street. This was the location of a bottling works for nearly 100 years. The photo is from the Fairfield County District Library's collection and was taken about 1970. The sign hanging on the far left (west) end of the building reads: Old Dutch Beer -- Lancaster Bottling Co.

How do I straighten a street sign that is crooked?

Travel rural roads, or visit older communities in your area and you're likely to see the mailbox posts with light green, sometimes blue colored house number signs on them. These signs are the effective in assisting the 911 emergency response services locate homes at night.

Many homes do not have adequate house numbers that can be effectively read at night.

This could lead to a very serious issue if emergency medical assistance is needed at night.

I've heard stories of a family member having to stand along the road at night to flag down the ambulance driver. Because the driver could not see the address and was driving back and forth up and down the road searching for the address.

When there is a medical emergency, help is needed fast and any delays in treatment can be a tragedy.

Many rural fire stations now offer reflective address signs as a fund raiser. These signs are made of similar materials used on highway and regular street signs, and come complete with the reflective numbers pre-installed. And they work very well. Usually they are priced at around $20.00. What a marvelous idea. The reflective house number signs are a fund raising product that can actually help save lives.

The signs are usually easy to install, most of the time just a couple of screws are required.

In some communities curb painting had been an option for house numbering. However, this is only a temporary solution at ($15/$20), and has to be re-painted every couple of years. The other downsides are that this solution can only be used if you have a curb and the curb house numbers are not reflective and can easily be hidden. The new reflective signs on the other hand, are very visible and may last up to 20 years.

Reflective house number signs are well worth the money and can easily add an additional element of safety to your home. Particularly those with senior citizens.
